Hey everyone, just wondering if you could help me out here. I really need to figure this out because no one can join my forum currently.
All of a sudden there is a problem with images being displayed on my forum. Certain members' avatars don't show (not all), and sometimes image attachments won't upload and will be just blank. But also the human verification image shows up as a red X (broken image) on the register page. If I turn off human verification, I'm instantly spammed with hundred of spambots joining.
Here is a couple screenshots of what's happening with the avatars. The first screenshot is from the 'members list' page. You can see where it shows two members' avatars, but the other is just text that says "insertusername's avatar." The other screenshot is from a post, and you can see it says the same under their name where the avatar normally would be, but this time it's a hyperlink, and directs to the member's profile.
Any idea what is going on here? I didn't change anything on my forum, it just started doing this one day. Could it be something that the webhost did?
Any help is GREATLY appreciated, thanks!

What version of vBulletin are you running? What version of PHP is on the server?

You need PHP 5.2/3 or to upgrade to 3.8.9

Ok, I switched it to 5.3, but there's no change. Is there anything else I need to do after changing it?
Thanks!

Use your browsers developer tools, look at the network panel and see what is going on with the images.

I've never used them before, but just tried it (using Firefox), but I really don't know what I'm looking for. Nothing sticks out to me. :(

You're being impacted by the PHP 5.4 change in GD.
Downgrade php to 5.3
Switch to ImageMagick, your webhost can tell you the binary path
Upgrade to 3.8.9, this is honestly your best bet, even if you have to pay to get a vb4 license. 3.8.4 has security issues and is on its last legs without PHP 5.4-6 support.

Use developer tools as mentioned above, specifically "Find Broken Images".. What does it show there? This will confirm what Zachary is saying about GD and I agree that you should upgrade!

Ok thanks, appreciate it!
Any idea why it only happens to certain images/avatars? Also, I have another VB3 forum running on the same webhost account (different domain), and that forum isn't affected at all.. why?
Thanks again!

some avatars are jpg, and others are not. Long term, moving to 3.8.9 is the best bet.

Weird, because not all jpegs or gifs are affected, just some. And they're not affected at all on the other forum. :(
Actually, I just checked ANOTHER forum I have on that account, and that one is perfectly fine also. For some reason just this one forum is having problems. I understand that I really should upgrade, but right now money is non-existent so I really can't afford to upgrade my license. Would you happen to know which files would be causing these problems? Maybe I can just re-upload those files, copied from the forums that are working properly? It's a band-aid I know, but would really help me out until I can afford to upgrade.
Thanks again for all your help thus far! :)

Yea, I just don't understand how 3 of the same exact forums on the same server, and only 1 has issues. That's why I was wondering if there was something I could do (reupload certain files?) temporarily until I can afford to upgrade.
