Show Upcoming Events on Mobile Theme?

A lot of my members are complaining about missing out when on the mobile version.

I am trying to display upcoming events on the mobile version with the following code:

However I don't think the variables are actually being assigned.

How can I extend it so that I can display events upcoming on the mobile theme?
