Maybe it is just the users I attract, but the most useful tool I ever had and which we relied on constantly prior to VB5 was a Multiple Account detector like this :

It helped prevent sock-puppets, banned users and trouble makers. IP checks just don't cut it.
You need a cookie stored separate from the log in, so it does not disappear as easily, and a way to check and report multiple users.

This is the single most missed tool/hack from previous versions. It should almost be built into VB it is so important. Unless you have a very vanilla, homogenous site and never get trolls, I honestly do not see how anyone can run a forum effectively without something like this.

I have some modifications on my site that I created in 5.1.4 that were broken in 5.1.5, then broken again in 5.1.6. As the bugs are being squashed out of VB5, it seems to be in a constant state of flux. I won't stop developing mods for my site, but until VB5 stabilizes, I won't be publishing any due to the amount of work and support that will be required at each release.
