Hi,
I am using vBulletin 5.1.5 in my site. I installed it in main directory of my sub domain but after installation the URL of pages look like http://forum.example.com/forum/channelname
How can I change this to http://forum.example.com/channelname
I am not using rewrite module or friendly url option.

There should be an option in the settings to change the URL. Once it's changed, move the files outside your /forum folder.
Either the above or create a new sub domain called fourm.blahblah and point it to your /forum folder.

You skipped the first sentence.
There should be an option in the settings to change the URL. You'll have to change that setting to match.

*If* I'm not mistaken, the /forum can't be removed unless you're using mod rewrite and you may even need an seo type plugin not sure if the same exist for 5.x as they do 4.x you'll need to check.

Yeah, you need to be using Mod rewrite to rewrite URL's. The best way to do that, is with DBSEO. And if you buy the Pro Version, there are even more features. DBSEO is a very big Addon in terms of features.

Indeed, after upgrading from vB4 to vB5 I have this similar problem, that actually looks awful and still haven't found a solution that doesn't break the platform :)
Currently the URL looks like this, with multiple "forums" in the URL (/forum/forum/forumname)

you can go to forumhome then turn sitebuilder on> edit page> do no changes at all and click save, there you can change your url

This seems to shed a bit of light on this subject, along with some feedback from vB staff and what not:
