View Full Version : Allowing Members to Freely Remove/Edit Polls

Hi everyone. :)
I've been searching around the modifications for vBulletin 4.2.x and also around this board but I cannot seem to find a solution and/or answer to my question. :(
In SMF, Users were freely able to edit and/or remove polls as long as they were the owner of that thread.
For vBulletin 4.2.2, I know that Mods and Admins can remove and edit the polling. However, we do not want to overburden our current staff nor do we want to increase our current size. :(
I also fear that our current users may become very disgruntled having to report to Mods to keep on deleting their polls so they can try to make more for weekly tv show discussions or weekly random polling.
Are there any confirmed paid and/or unpaid modifications that are working when it comes to allowing regular members to edit or remove their polls (as long as they started the thread)?
Thank you for reading! :)
Edit: Also, I have another question. Can polls be made in the same thread once it is deleted? I haven't tried because I'm still too busy with setting up the website :(

Not that I know of right off the top of my head. There maybe an option though that is built into vBulletin. If you have a certain forum area that members are allowed to post polls for these things and they are not posted elsewhere you maybe able to set it up with forum permissions. Technically there is no permissions for delete a poll unless you are an admin/mod, but there is a permission for delete your post or thread. So if you have this in one forum area, and I say keep it in one forum area because I'm betting you do not want members running around the forum deleting their posts all over the place, you could set it up pretty easily.
To set up the forum for this:
1. Login to your admincp & go to Forums & Moderators > Forum Permissions - Click "Quick Forum Permission Setup" in the top right of the box.
2. Choose the forum you want to set this up at in the drop down on the next page. Just choose the exact forum.
3. Now tick your members usergroup that you want to allow to delete the polls in the list below that. Only tick that group.
4. Set the permissions as you want them when you get down to "Can Delete Own Posts" & "Can Delete Own Threads" set both to "yes".
5. After you are done click the "Save" button at the bottom on the page.
This will give them the option to delete the post or the entire thread when they are done with it. Be sure to set ALL of those permissions when you are doing it or the users will lose all the perms except the ones you have ticked "yes", so be mindful of that.
Edit: Also, I have another question. Can polls be made in the same thread once it is deleted? I haven't tried because I'm still too busy with setting up the website :(
I think you can create another poll in the same thread after you have deleted one. I've never tried to do that but I think its possible inside vBulletin to do.

But beware: Deleting the first post in vB automatically deletes the whole thread. Just so this is clear.
And: I really don't think it's a good idea to have polls editable by users once they have started. So people vote, and then someone changes the options?
And why would you want to delete the polls at all? Why not just keep them, and open a new thread for a new poll?

Thank you HM666 and cellarius for taking your time to respond! :)
@HM666; I really appreciate the alternative solution but I don't want them to delete their posts. xD
If all else fails, I might just use it as a last resort if my fellow mods and admins are all pooped out. We've been getting a handful of requests for poll deletions everyday (which was why I came here to ask if there was any mods for it or settings I overlooked) xD
@cellarius; Yeah, I tried that earlier on a test thread. :(
For SMF, members are freely able to add/delete/edit the poll. Whenever they edit the poll, they basically only edit the options, not the poll votes.
If a poll was made for "Do you like Bananas?" and the options were only Yes and No, the user may want to edit the options to add in Maybe because (s)he might have forgotten about it.
And allowing members to freely change their votes at anytime (if the thread starter allows it) helps too. I found an Undo Vote modification by BirdOfPrey for this one though. :)
My members think it's too much of a hassle to create threads for weekly discussions and they felt it's a lot more simpler to just put it all into one thread and continually update it. This was one of the redeeming features that SMF offered, but I want to go vB 4.2 since I didn't really like SMF with its error log spam and how mods easily conflict one another..

Yeah I thought about that but was pretty tired last night when I posted that and forgot to go back and edit it to include that info. :(
If you or one of your staff are good with coding then you might want to code something into vBulletin allowing this function. If not perhaps one of the PHP coders on here can help you out. I'm guessing that it will probably take a PHP plugin to make this change. If no one can help you then you might want to think about posting it in the Paid Requests (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/forumdisplay.php?f=30) area.

@HM666; Unfortunately most of us are probably only entry level programmers at best. I'll probably have to ask around the Staff later.
Oh okay, thanks for the tip! Once I can allocate extra funding, I'll most likely visit that section for that purpose later. :D
