Is there anyway to do this?

For funding/grant reasons I want to collect more demographic details from users. I doubt many would seek out the edit profile page and update it if just a pleading thread was made, so a more head on approach is required.

Just realised there is the built in function to do this. There are ways around it but I don't think anyone will bother trying to.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway :)

Speaking just as a user... I would really really be annoyed by that and probably just hit the X button on my browser and never return.

But, that's just me.

Just ask them if they would like to update their profile and give them a provocative reason. :)

I always throw in a fake entry like. Disable future ads. (We never plan to have ad's.) :)

Keep it simple, I agree with @Max Taxable.

The members have been notified why it is occurring. They're understanding. Probably due to the nature of the site - we're a non-profit support service, and the extra funding we gain from gathering this added demographic data basically goes back into the members - no where else. Members who register from this point on will fill the info at registration, so they'll never see the prompts.

If I lost members because they don't want to click 4 buttons (yes, that's all it ends up being) I don't think they'd be the type who are motivated to use the site properly in the first place. Not that I don't care about them - just that our site in general takes more effort than four clicks.

There's lots of ways to rationalize and justify annoying users.

Maybe it's because we're based in NZ where people are chill or something, but I haven't received a single complaint (we have many channels open for it) and all our staff have agreed it's not affecting anyone.

All other nonprofits here basically hand out a 10 page form on joining (there is an extreme amount of competition here for funding, so data is key). It almost seems like they're trying to steal your identity. Compared with 4 clicks? I think I know what I'd be more annoyed by

It is all good then. :)

I am kind of a hypocrite. On my own boards my thinking is if they cannot do this simple thing for the benefit of the board who needs them. :) On boards I visit (not friends), I will end up being annoyed as @Max Taxable said. :)

Yeah... this is also a primarily youth service (and many are experiencing tough times), so I think you can imagine how hard it is for us to get them to do this stuff with a simple forum post or thread. A few would but most wouldn't unfortunately. I'd like to be able to just post and have them do it but it's an unrealistic expectation. If they get annoyed they're welcome to let off that steam over the forums about it haha.
