If you're looking for a cheaper way to get a custom appearing theme, but don't have the funds to pay a designer, perhaps check out some premium themes available online. From there you can probably tweak one enough for it to look less cookie-cutter. There are some really nice styles on the net - most under $50 - that could do this quite well for you.
