I'm looking for a way to have the option to state why a topic is being locked and for it to be publicly listed in the topic on the top.

Use thread prefixes and with html code you can add colour its what I use you can also set them so only what group you want to use can have access to them

Of course, but then it's only visible on that page.

But if the reason is long, I don't want to have any prefixes stretching the page.

The member does not need a reason why the post has been closed/locked

Does it really matter here? If one wants to give a reason, then that's up to them.

I quickly searched the modifications on vBulletin.org, with no luck, but this is something you should do yourself to be thorough -- if you have not already. :) Both responses were reasonable and great suggestions, since you did ask for an "option" and this was not a programming question. :)

Well, you did ask for an option in your first post I gave you a way to do it and it's the best way that I can see the only other way you could go is post in paid section and pay someone to code something for you but I don't see a point doing that when my first way is the best

Well, Elixar didn't exactly ask for options, he asked for a mod that gives the option of providing a reason (i.e. it's not required). And this is the unpaid request forum, so it's the right place to ask someone else to code it.

Thanks @KH99, I thought he was in the discussion forum myself. Thanks for the correction. :) I may have lead @Force down the wrong road with my post.

@Elixer - Sincerest apologies. My replies are based on the forum where the thread is posted. I thought you posted your question in the 'discussion' forum. As @KH99 correctly pointed out your question was a valid question for this area of the board. My statement above did not reflect that and now looking back seems a bit harsh in it's tone. In this case my blunder carried down into the thread; where my response lead the tone for others (I think). I believe in correcting and apologizing for my mistakes and this one is definitely on me. Sorry bud! :)

Made the same mistake as tbworld I thought after reading his post, it was in the wrong section as well, but I still think my first post was the best way to go unless he pays someone to code something is the only other option as there is no plugins around that will do it unless tbworld wants to make a quick plugin

I understand, but I'd rather have it to simply add a reason rather than messing with prefixes.

unless tbworld wants to make a quick plugin

This all the way. :D

It's not something that can be done quickly. I hope someone will take it on, but you may need to resort to paying someone to do it.

Try reading it a few times then you will see he did not mean he will be doing it

I cannot update it for you because it isn't marked as reusable code, therefore the code belongs to the author, best you can do is pm the author or ask him in the thread nicely if he/she will update it.

The stupid nonreuseable kills some hacks cannot be updated to vB4, some coders dont want to update their hacks and noone else can do it because of "permissions"!

Released: 02 Oct 2008 -> today is 7 August 2014 . So funny.

It died not kill it, you simply need to code the mod for vB4, in your own coding method.

How about using this mod here and just make it work like the "Reason for Closed Thread" mod ... I see it do the same thing, it can display the reason why above the thread just like that mod ...

Ya know, I never thought of that, that just may work for the OP.

That's visible to only Staff, and I'm planning on using it for Staff though, so it won't work.

Haha, let me explain.

The reason for locking would be possible to all if a reason was giving. The Staff Comments mod
CAG CheechDogg linked to will be in use, but it's only for Staff, not for the public.

Ahhh, ok so you want to use the mod for staff, but also have a reason displayed if there was given, to two separate things.

Well that mod is marked as re-usable, so if I get some free time, I can see about modifying it, do you can run it as it is, and install a similar one, to use for adding closed reason comments.

Are you talking about changing it to allow a reason for locking? Would the reason for locking be visible to all, or only Staff?

Hmm, I'm really up for anything, though I would prefer a separate modification that would allow me to disable it if needed.

Yeah it would be a separate mod, from the one that was linked, bus similar functionality.

You could use the staff posting modification and then use @Ausphotography's suggestion and just edit or add a last post to the thread, explaining why the thread is being locled. I assuming from reading the threads here that only your staff can lock a thread. Granted, an integrated system would be a bit nicer, but at least it would solve the immediate need and it would not have to be undone if a better solution came along.

Or have I just re-iterated what is already obvious. :) In that case nevermind. :)

I do see where you're coming from, but I'm looking for something that isn't that obvious if you get what I mean.

In the settings you can add the IDs of the usergroups you want to see the notes which would be your reason as to why you locked the thread, no? ...

Features:
-Allows usergroups to see staff notes
-Allows specific users to see staff notes
-Supports BB Code

Ok you can get the mod from this thread, https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=313594

There was not much at all left of Chilaxin's mod after I was done with it, It is pretty much completely re-written. :)

A couple of things from this thread while I close it;

The member does not need a reason why the post has been closed/locked
This really wasnt necessary, the OP stated they were looking for ways to do this, not for an opinion on whether you think its required.

This is not a debate about how the laws of copyright work. They are what they are.
