View Full Version : Karma Mod -- Request For Comment (RFC)
certindex
10-24-2001, 02:09 AM
We have recently purchased vBulletin and will be integrating it into our site. There are several mods we need in order to release the forum. The first and most important, is a Karma mod.
So that our effort can help people not just on our web site, but also you other vBulletin webmasters, I would like to get your input. Please put great thought into the features you would like in the Karma system, what Karma would be based on, etc. and inform me here.
We will compile all of the best ideas, thoughts, feature request, etc. and formulate a description of how the final Karma system will work and post it to this forum. Then we'll take final comments and begin to develop it. After that we'll release it to everyone. I have contacted the vBulletin guys about including mods we do in future versions of vBulletin (They've yet to reply.), so let's make sure we make the ideas for this mod killer!
Regards!
ps: We are professional developers. You can be sure the mod will be top quality.

If something is up to vBulletin's standards and is something that users want, chances are we will include it. We may or may not use existing code in those cases; we may base it on an existing hack, but then again we may not. It all depends.

Fair enough. So everyone, let's get down to the feature/idea suggestion/requests for the Karma mod! We're hoping to get it all ironed out by the end of the week and have the mod written by the middle of next week.

I've seen countless posts by people regarding Karma, yet noone has posted thoughts/ideas/requests regarding it. The end of this week is as long as we can wait. After that, you have no excuse to bug other people about a Karma hack. :-)
heh, well people have requested it alot back in the day and they know where to get it. so many people opt to get Overgrows karma hack. while others just make then and dont realese them to the publice

Here is what I'm looking for.
I like the way sitepoint.com has points assigned for each users, 2 points for new topics and 1 point for replies. Then combine that with a feature that gives points when your thread reaches x number of replies and/or x number of views. So that you get points for starting good topics and not just spam.
And then combine it with a rating system and give points to users based on thier ratings from other users like UBB 6 allows.
Two of these I've seen seperately and they don't work well apart, IMHO. Combining them together eliminates the need for people to spam for points and helps eliminate people getting upset by bad reviews.
Then have these points totaled each month/quarter/6 months/week/year, etc. So that we could run contests for the users.
thanks

One more thing...
Also assign points for referrals.

I'm looking exackly for this for ages. :)
The above suggestions are all very good and exackly what I wanted myself. Here is what I would like to add.
Allow admin to toggle (change the points given to number of post or reply) and ability to add more custom fields.
Points can be use to purchase "standard avatar (e.g require 20 points)", custom avatar (e.g require 40 points), custom titles (e.g require 50 points) and etc. Once they purchase the points will be deducted from their total.
Points can also be use to exchange discounts e.g 15% (can be anything that you sell).
Set expiry dates for all the point (customizable depends on each webmaster) e.g every end of the year if the user did not use them it will expire.
I'll let you know of more ideas if I think of any.
lol so you have seen shinraonlines store hack have you. well good luck with it. we thinks i might make a free karma hack someday

Great ideas/requests guys! Some stuff was along the lines of what we have been thinking for the hack, and some ideas were brand new to us. Keep up the good work! This is going to be the best karma hack around.

If you can make it do what the karma hack does:
Your karmic rating will be displayed underneath all of your posts. Only you will know your exact number of karmic points-- you can view this by clicking on the Karma icon on the right hand side of your own post. For every 100 points positive or negative, you will gain another karmic rating light.
Features:
-Members can approve or disapprove of a post by clicking on the Karma icon
-You can give 10 Karma awards every 24 hours
-You can only give one Karma award per post
-Users with more karma and a longer time registered will give more karma points with each click than a new member with no karma. An old well respected user might give 7 points per click while a new user will only give 1.
-You can see if your post has positive or negative karma by clicking on the icon.
And allow full customization of what features you want to be active: for example I am not interested in giving points for posts or replys, but a toggle would be good =)

are you running the latest version of adcycle? how is the accuracy of the impression/click counting and tracking? how many page views per day are you doing?
certify

Yes I'm running the laest version 1.17
if you use the recommemded cache burst mode the page views are more accurate. But I'm using SSI for most of my page. Overall I'm pretty satisfied with this product.
Page views on avarage of 60,000 per day.

Truthfully, the rating threads into a persons karma should be seperate. A person should be judged on his/her character by what he/she posts, and the only way to do that of course is to post, however, having a seperate area for lets say, personality, posts, behavior, leadership etc...would be more meaningful than a basic popularity contest set upon a couple of posts that probably were just as meaningless to most, as it was to some.
Having limitations on voting, or polls are what sets up accuracy, so having a very stringent gate upon voting choices, or categories of that user would be prudent to the sucess of the hack.
Meaning in short, if I would like to vote on a user, giving them karma, i would be confronted with a area, that would have lets say...5 different voting areas. A sorted drop box if you will, in each category. These total votes across the board, would than be averaged out, after i had chosen a set value in the drop downs from each category, than ultimately totaled, and given a complete set amount that would be later displayed in that users karma area.
At anytime, any user could click on another member's karma profile link, and possibly see the last "10" entries given by other users, which would display all the votes given across the board in either a numberical output, or even a possible graphical bar output.
Any user who had voted on the member, could not vote again for a set time period.
To eliminate the "you scratched my back, so I will scratch yours" that is so prevailant on sites such as "EBay", a user would not be allowed to vote on any added karma given to him/her for at least 20 days from another user. This will also promote a more of a community base, due in part the user, if he/she really wants to set his/her karma at a higher standard, will now approach other users, or participate more in daily discussions.

Ok guys, sorry it took so long but we finally got the time to work out an idea. What do you think about this:
Every thread you begin, users can rate it from 1-5. The average rating is how many points you earn from it. For each x (Configurable, for example 5.) replies you get 1 bonus point. For each y (Configurable, for example 25.) views you get 1 bonus point. Both of the bonus point values cannot exceed the average rating of the thread, thus giving each thread a max of 15 points. For example if your thread is rated 3, no matter how many views or replies it got, you couldn't earn more than 3 bonus points for each bonus type. So 3+3+3 = 9.
What do you think?

just to let you guys know, it's going to add a couple columns to a couple tables. this may not be acceptable for some of you so i just wanted to let you know right away so you didn't stay excited too long. for the rest of you, this mod is actually coming along very bloody well. it's implementation has been easier than expected and has taken a lot less code than previously thought. it's also quite efficient despite the fact that all stats are updated in real time... mmm ya baby.

by the way, where do you guys want the config options stored? (like how many views are required for each 'viewbonus point'. i was thinking the table that vB Options are stored in. 'options' or 'settings' or whatever it is. or directly in one of the php files? we don't really care where so we'll let you guys decide.

of course it does. how much we won't be sure until we load test the thing, which we'll do before we release it. this is a very simplistic description, but it'll hold you over: every time you post a thread or reply it does about 10 lines of php and a couple db queries. FAIRLY light-weight. more info to come.
