Same as any other upgrade but best to do it in steps on a test site first and backup after each step on live site

1. create full backup
2. close the forum
3. disable plugins
4. upload the vb 4.2.2 files and replace vb3 files (assuming that you dont have modified vb core files)
5. run upgrade.php
6. update counters
7. upgrade the plugins if there are vb4 version. disable if not compatible
8. open the forum

There are instructions in the manual on how to do an upgrade - https://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/upgrade?manualversion=40202500

You don't need to delete files. You might delete other files like plugin files.

You just need to overwrite the vb3 files with the latest vb4 files..

Note that most vb3 plugins doesnt work with vb4. And also your vb3 theme will never work properly on vb4..

If you are going to update to 4.2.2 there are some fixes you will need to put into some files before you upload them to the ftp so you might be best to update to 4.2.1 first if you are not sure but whatever you do backup first and disable plugins via the config and close forum. Also if you dont have an update for your skins then you will need to remove then as none will work

Can someone explain step by step how to upgrade from 3.8.4 to 4.2.2?I'd recommend you think long and hard about it first and ask some important and thoughtful questions to yourself about it.

Primer here. (http://ozzmodz.com/showthread.php/1367-The-quot-need-to-upgrade-quot-myth-busted)

You are making a big mistake you will long regret.

I agree 100%. I am at 4.2.0 PL2 and this is where I will stay. I've made many custom changes and they would not port easily to a new version like 5.0

I also read in the mod section that some of the 4.x.x mods will not work with 5.0 so an upgrade to 5.0 for me would render some of the mods I use totally useless.

Upgrades end up causing a lot of problems.

Upgrades end up causing a lot of problems.I don't tell people NOT to upgrade, I just try to get them to THINK alot about it, first. It's a big decision that isn't easily reverted, ever. Not to be taken lightly, or just on a whim.

Not sure there are ANY v4 mods or addons that will work with v5, it is so radically different.

No vB4 addon will work with vB5. There is no plugin system anymore, it works completely different.
