Hi

I have a weird problem with some of my threads
they have very high view count

for example
one thread with 350 replies has 4500 views and one thread with only 170 replies has 32,000 views

I know for some forums these numbers are normal but not mine

what could be the cause?

please help me

thanks in advance

It could just be the google search has bumped your result higher for some reason. Resulting in loads of new traffic to your site but not necessarily registered members.

thanks dreadsuk
is there any ways i can fix it?
reducing those numbers and stop it to happen again

It could be you are getting a lot of bad bots visiting your site this is not good. install this (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=268208) plugin to stop them

I wouldn't worry about your view count, at least not enough to go out of your way to try to fix it.

Do you have any modifications? Usually these types of problems are the result of a modification.

thanks guys
how much more views should i get to start worrying about it?
I mean I really need good bots from big search engines right now

thanks Lynne
honestly I'm not sure
it's just one week I'm the admin of this forum and I'm not sure about the mods before
I checked and didn't see anything unusual
is there any specific place i should check?

Any modification that deals with posting or threads would be worth looking at. But honestly, you'd spend a lot of time trying to understand the code just to change some thread views which most people won't notice in the first place.

thanks again

I'm disabling mods one by one

I wouldn't necessarily worry about view counts, either, but some of us (like me) have certain clients who freak out about not-real views. I installed the ban spiders mod (thanks for the suggestion!), but I would still like to "fix" the view count for my client, but can't figure out how. Anyone?

So, my professional advice is to tell them it can't be fixed, or refuse to fix it. otherwise you're going to be spending a lot of time fixing this "problem" for them.

Each thread has a views column. I think you can put 1 + 1 together from that.

This is something I wouldn't worry about after you install the mod you just did for spiders.

I would suggest you block facebook and a few other sites's spiders, bots and crawlers ...I have the following list for that mod of the spiders I personally block. You can just remove the ones that you want your site to be crawled by but that is a very good list ..

Right now I have an average of 15-20 bots or spiders on my site per day, Google being the main one and Twitter as well .. I don't need anyone else crawling my site, you might but maybe this will help you as well ..

Like any troubleshooting/engineering you have to trace, log and track your desired information. Some of these trace points will have to added manually, as @Lynne has pointed that out many of your MODS could be a possibility here. Companies employ a strategy of internal analytics to solve these type of amplified page views. This is usually added at the design phase of a product.

If your lucky, the problem is arising from external sources that can easily be tracked via server logging or by external analytics. A professional log analyzer can also be of assistance.

If you cannot make use of one of the strategies above, and your server load is not extensive. Use professional external analytics for your customers and call it a day. :)

Also at some point you have to decide what is more important for your website and forums .. Having bots and spiders crawl your site is not a bad thing, but some bots are just a plain nuisance and can eat up your bandwidth ...My site kept crashing because of facebook always having over 100 spiders crawling it at the same time.. no matter what i did I could not get them to stop crawling my site and making it crash ..

I had to use the mod to block spiders and completely blocked Facebook and the rest of the spiders I have on that list.... I have no problem with people finding me on Google or even Yahoo for that matter and to me having my site rank up high is no priority. The audience that my site attracts is mostly by word of mouth and a handful of sites on which we advertise our site and clan...

So you might have to make some decisions here on what it is that you want if that is even an issue with you.

You cannot get back what your thread views were unless you have a database backup and them manually copy them from one database to the other.

You can run a query though, like this:

Update xyz_thread
SET views = replycount * 2
WHERE views < xxxx
where "xyz_" is your thread prefix (if you use one) and xxxx is the criteria for too high count threads. That will set it to 2 times the number of replies. Change the query as wanted and make sure you test this on your test site first and that you also do a database backup before running the query.

Oh, hell no. I don't get paid enough for all that. I'll tell him I've blocked future bad spider bots and that what's already there can't be fixed. Sheesh!

LMAO !!! Yeah I would do the same thing too my Man, there just isn't a reason to even worry about all those past stats now ...just move on and if you got that mod installed you "WILL BE" fine ...
