View Full Version : Banned someone, but it doesn't solve the problem at all!

I resently banned a member by account.
10 minutes later he had a new account, so i banned his IP address also.

The problem is now:
His ISP has a DHCP lease of 2 weeks.
This means in 2 weeks (or less) he has a new IP address, and can annoy us again.

What can i do about this exept "miserable users" (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=231106), and blocking his IP every 2 weeks?

Install this, yes it does work with 4.x.

Do not tell your members about it though otherwise he/she may view the post before creating a new account and simply know to delete cookies before attempting the next registration.

Using this mod you should be alerted when they signup a new account ;).

Does it have false-positives? Yes but rarely.
When would this not work well? In situations like dorm rooms and such where a universal computer is used and more than one person know about and use your site from said pc.
This will not ban the member, it will alert you then you can review and take the action you deem is required.

When you detect a banned member retreading, simply put them in global ignore. (Tachy goes to Coventry) They think they are posting okay, but nobody can see them. Keeps you from playing tag and the find me ban me game endlessly.

Banning IPs - today's banned IP is tomorrow's legitimate user being blocked. I ceased banning IPs long ago, it's useless.

This is a great plug in but had issues for me recently with Vb4.2.2. This could have been something minor though, I just do not remember the exact issue other than nobody was able to log in.

I'm running it on 4.2.2 with no problems at all. What kind of issues are you seeing?

Well it was a client site and after an upgrade to the latest version of 4 this mod was causing issues with logging in. Nobody was able too.

I'm sorry I do not have the errors any more that were involved but it was this mod that was causing the problem. Keep in mind I just removed the mod as it was not needed any longer on this particular site and that I did not troubleshoot the issue. It could have been caused by something simple like depreciation, I just do not recall.

I have had members tell me that they have had some weird issues with being logged out while posting and having to log in 3 or 4 times to be able to make a post. I haven't been able to duplicate that but I wonder if this might have something to do with it? I might try disabling it to see if it makes any difference.
