Hello i'm starting to promote at this month a big promotion for my board (vb5) and were looking for some more mods where i realised that there doesnt exist many.
I wondered cause i remember that vb5 exist already some time.
So after reading a lot of comments i'm not so confident anymore to go with vb5.
Its going to be a big board with several hundreds posts a day.
You guys would recommend to stay with vb5 as it will be soon updated (3-6 months) or to create a new board (downgrade using custom scripts) quickly before the big promotions starts?
The second option would be a bit of hassle but i prefer that then my big promotion going to puff away

I think 4.2.2 is the best out there right now. It has all of the features you want, the stylevar system and it is very secure as long as you remove the install directory and make sure you are using the latest YUI Uploader file or replace the old one with a blank. :D

Ha!
Every time I visit here I say the same thing about the mostly empty mod section for VB5, and I ponder what it means in the grand scheme, I imagine very few 3 and 4 will ever adopt 5 while the mods are scarce.
To that end I suggest you go with 4. Modern (subjective) and secure and well supported by mod and add on.

I brought v5 and it was absolute gash. i lost months of work and potential members. Then its cost me a lot of money to pay someone to move all the account over for a downgrade to 4.2.2
I regret ever second wasted on vB5 and would actively discourage anyone from ever using it. I'd be more than happy to rant for every on how crappy it was

Vb4 everytime
Everyone seems to rant against VB5 but what are the reasons specifically? I mean is there anything wrong with 5.1 if you don't run any mods on the site? Are the lack of mods the only reason people are staying away from it.

Everyone seems to rant against VB5 but what are the reasons specifically? It is a radical departure from previous versions.
And yes, if you already have a vB installation and want to "upgrade" none of your custom styles will work, none of your modifications will work, and none of your custom template edits or custom CSS will work.
There are very few customizations and styles for v5 because very few coders want to mess with it.
If you don't have a previous version and vB5 is your first experience, that's a bit of a different topic. Are the lack of mods the only reason people are staying away from it.

My own personal experience was that everything, literally everything f**ked up!
*photo upload link was broken and never fixed
*profile pages crashed
*people were unable to post or edit their profiles
*posts and threads kept crashing
those were the biggest issues. i cant remember what else when wrong.... oh yea, user promotions NEVER worked. The list was endless
I was glad to see the back of it tbh and never looked back.
So are you guys talking about Vb5.0.x or Vb5.1.x when you say lots of issues with Vb5. They seem to have resolved a number of issues since the 5.0 release.

I still would recommend vB4.2.2, you can always upgrade to 5 at a later date.
