View Full Version : Member Posting Issues
A couple members appear to be having some issues when attempting to post. Below is a private message one of my moderators sent me explaining his difficulties posting. I am not very technically Savvy so any and all help would be appreciated.
As you know, I can't change the font style or color in any replies along with not being able to scroll back up to see the original message in certain posts like the happy birthday to therealjr that you posted. Also at times I have to pound on the keys to make the letters appear in the reply. It doesn't happen most of the time, just sometimes but it seems like it's mostly pms like this one which I have had to go back and retype some letters because hey didn't take the first time. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. I think there's more, I just can't remember what they are right now.
I can set up a test account for anyone who would like to possibly test it out and see what the issue or issues might be.
Thanks for any help offered it is greatly appreciated.

Create a new style with no parent:
Styles & Templates > Style Manager > Add New Style
Parent Style: No Parent Style
Title: Default vBulletin
Allow User Selection: Yes
Save
Then have those users use this totally default vbulletin style - do they still have the same problem?

The first thing I think of is, do these "couple" of users have the same browser in common? Do they have same issues using other browsers? Is it really only a couple of people? Do they use the same style?
The second thing I think of is, does this still happen with hooks disabled? Try it by going AdminCP>Options>Plugin/Hook System and disable hooks there, then have them test.
The third thing I thought of is, how heavy is his pageload? So I checked it and the results are not good:

You have multiple 404 errors from either missing or misnamed files, terrible first byte time and overall lethargic loading. There's alot of js involved here, alot of which isn't necessary - example: Do you really need visitors to see the chat box and the top ten stats?
70% of bytes loaded is from images... 14% from js.
Many of the js heavy mods can interfere with the wysiwyg editors, can also still be trying to load stuff on browsers while people are typing - this can be why it doesn't seem to "take" when they type. Checking this behavior out while hooks disabled is a must.

To the OP: Just by getting rid of the chatbox for visitors, (as I see you did) you shaved almost three seconds off your load time and did away with 9 requests.

I am waiting for the 2 members who are having the issues to reply to my private messages to have them make some sdample posts to see if the problems have been fixed. I have disabled the Hooks as well as put the default vbulletin style up for them to test as well. Now it is just a waiting game I guess to see if their issues are resolved. I can tell you this however I have a mod installed log into user account and I logged into his account created a test thread using colored font and boldness and such with no issues so I too am wondering if this is a browser issue on their end. I do appreciate you letting me know about the long load times because of the chat box. As far as the top 10 stats mod goes I found no where in the plug in where it would allow me to make it so visitors could not view them. Thank you everyone who have helped thus far it is greatly appreciated.

However in the options for it, look under "Permissions" and find:
Usergroups can't view stats (List IDs, separate with commas)
'1,' is the default usergroup ID number for the unregistered/not logged in usergroup.
You may wish for these stats to display to visitors and guests, it can provide the appearance of activity. It's strictly personal preference but displaying it adds to your server load and adds alot of calls, and these are greatly multiplied if you have alot of guests such as spiders and so on. Can really slow down your server and get you in trouble with your host.
An update the member/moderator who is having the issue is still having the issue even with the hooks disabled and the use of the default vbulletin style. I even signed in with internet explorer to test it and I was able to use font and bold and all that when posting he still can not. I even used a test account and changed the account to the same usergroup as him and was still able to use all the fonts and such. I am at a complete loss here lol I am having him download fire fox for bleeps and giggles just to see if his most current version of internet explorer might be the issue my ie in like 2 years old without updates lol.

Is the person able to post by switching the setting, Force Latest IE Mode in the group, Cookies and HTTP Header Options from what you have it set to now?
He is off line right now but I have changed the setting to yes and private messaged him to have him give ie another go. Appreciate the suggestion will update once he has tested it out.

Yup you are right sir it is isolated to just his machine and the other member machine as well. I changed the setting in the http cookies section and that did not fix his issue so I guess it is up to him now to get it worked out on his end. I appreciate your help everyone's help very much.

Indeed lolBut actually this could serve as a wake-up call to them. They are having these issues because with use of IE no matter how recent the version, there is no telling what other junk scripts are running on their computers - and this is regardless of what anti-virus stuff they have. Keyloggers are known to cause typing problems, for example.
Because there is NO anti-malware or anti-virus program which can be effective if the user permissions the malware. This is often done sometimes by just clicking on adverts, it's done permissioning games, apps, facebook crap - IE users invariably have a bunch of junkware and malware, adware and trackers, keyloggers even, running in their registry without their knowledge - and the anti-virus and anti-malware protections they have won't spot them, because the user permissioned them! Therefore they are whitelisted in the programs!
This is why so many IE users have this illusion there's nothing wrong, gee it must be YOUR site, because when they scan their computer for viruses and malware with their onboard products, everything comes up clean. But it's far from clean.
Anyhow, /rant.
Glad you got this worked out Pal. I think you still want to clean up those multiple 404 errors though.
P.S.
my ie in like 2 years old without updates lol.Ironically, that alone probably makes yours more secure than theirs! :D
Yeah I will certainly get those 404 errors fixed once I can come up with the funds to hire a Tech to do it for me as I started this thread out I am certainly not Tech knowledgeable lol and Ozzy no smart #$% comments please lol.

Well if either of you 2 fine Gents wouldn't mind taking a look and see if the issues could be resolved then I would be most grateful

If you want, you can PM ma a admin account, and FTP info, and I can look into it as soon as I get a some free time. I will probably have Max help me as well.

Solving the problem involves making sure the files called for exist in your server, and if they do exist are they correctly named in the scripts where they are being called..
The links I posted earlier for your tests? Show these calls and the file names called for. Clicking on them gives you more detail. It simply becomes a whack-a-mole type operation - you look in your files and folders to see if these files are there. If they are not, you upload them where the script expects to find them. If they are, then you must look at the actual call to see if the scripts are calling the right location and file name.
For one of us to do this job we would need access to the FTP, and admin access to the site. You can PM this information to either of us and one or the other will be happy to look into the situation.
Really appreciate the Help you have given me Max Taxable more than you know.
