I contacted my host and they are saying that the issue is on my side, though they can't say what it is, just that's its code, or corrupt DB, etc. Does that sound right? Any suggestions on how to fix this? Thanks.
Database error in vBulletin 4.2.2:
Invalid SQL:
UPDATE datastore SET
data = data - 60,
data = IF(data < 0, 0, data)
WHERE title = 'mailqueue';

Find out what the wait_timeout is set to.

Is that something in php.ini or host provides that?

"MySQL Server has gone away" is a server issue. See this: https://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/troubleshoot_mysql_goneaway and this: https://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=310265#post310265 You will need to talk to your host about this in order to get it resolved.
The wait_timeout is actually a MySQL variable. By default it is set to 28800, but most sites are fine with it set around 300.

Start looknig for a new host.
Seriously - if this is an example of their level of their competance then you have no chance if you hit a real problem.
Look for a host that has at least a clue about what they are doing.

You are always going to see this on shared hosting that is OVERSOLD. Paul is right, you need to get a competent and responsible host. Alot of them OVERSELL the cheaper shared hosting, then try to blame you when the server farts from overload. Then they try to up-sell you. Been through this for years, seen it time and time again not just personally but with many friends as well, on different platforms too.
It's not you, it's definitely not vBulletin, it's their oversold machine.

Who said programmers don't have a sense of humor. Not to minimize the obvious, but " the server has gone away " OMG man.. lol Might have just said " your server has left the building "

Ok, my contract expires in a couple of months. Anyone recommend a good, inexpensive host? Thanks.

I'd say check out http://invokevm.com they have great prices and the support will bend over backwards to help you.

I have had hostgator since 2009 but after they got sold to EIG performance is not the same. They have recently been wanting me to upgrade from shared hosting and I never had problems in the past on shared hosting, their customer service is nowhere near what they used to have and they always blame me or the scripts instead of admitting something is wrong on their side. This will be the last year I stay with hostgator unless they improve which I highly doubt they will.
But yes, this is something server side ...

Ditto.
They even started locking up my forum with the reason "to many processes running". I had no changes to the forum for years.
Also I had those "SQL server gone away" errors suddenly over and over with them.
Switched to URLjet. Not the cheapest but very reliable, fast and great customer service.
