Can anybody advise me how I add small adverts like the ones in the attached image to my forums.
Any help very much appreciated

Perhaps a link to the site where they have that, so someone can look at the source code to see what they did.

Hm, IIRC you can use html in forum descriptions. If so, my guess is it's a simple right floated div containter at the beginning of the forum description.
Something like:
<div style="float: right">Your add code here</div>Main forum description
