On my forum, I have my existing boards plus boards that I've archived of the same name. My question is, am I risking being penalized by Google for having the duplicate board names? What is the best way to avoid this issue, if it even is one?

For instance:
I have a current board called "P8I Bulletin Board", but in my P8i Archive 2009-2011 section, I have an older version of "P8I Bulletin Board" (separate content, but same name)

See: Link (http://p8i.com/forum/)

Would it even be possible to prevent Google from indexing the board name, but not the rest of the content inside?

No, not anymore than you would be penalized each time someone started a thread with the same name. Google penalizes based on large blocks of duplicate content.

Duplicate content generally refers to substantive blocks of content within or across domains that either completely match other content or are appreciably similar. Mostly, this is not deceptive in origin. Examples of non-malicious duplicate content could include:

Discussion forums that can generate both regular and stripped-down pages targeted at mobile devices
Store items shown or linked via multiple distinct URLs
Printer-only versions of web pages

And those actually would be large blocks of duplicate content, but Google makes a distinction between those and malicious content. In short, you'd kinda have to go out of your way to raise flags in that respect.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, Digital Jedi. Much appreciated.
