Its up to you, its not needed.

Its also a deprecated feature, later releases of PhP dont have it.

Understood, so running without safe mode is acceptable.

Yes, some vhosts have it on by default for security, but its not needed.

If you have it on, then you can't store avatars/attachments in the file system.

I've never had it on for any of my servers.

I'd upgrade php version because its deprecated (so not needed) feature and newer php distrs dont have it.

Or just turn it off - it will do no harm.
