I saw this in the comments of a few different websites - basically, the community can vote to collapse a reply if they don't think it should be displayed - almost like voting down replies. This would help give the community a tool to cut down on the clutter and only show the best replies in threads. It's not as harsh as a soft delete.
We already have the main elements available to do this, with the collapse function and the user voting systems. Essentially, just make it so that there's a "vote to collapse" link near the Permalink button and make admin-defined settings to determine the threshold for collapsing the reply. Maybe give different usergroups different voting power, then once the threshold is met, the reply gets collapsed with a message saying that the "reply was collapsed by the community".
Doubt it will get built but I think it would be a good feature.
