using human verify outside of registration.php

We have a custom registration block in the sidebar, but it doesn't work if human verify is enabled. We've added a hook so that the human verify option appears (Q&A), but when we submit the form, it says the Answer is wrong (I don't think it's ever passed through).

Any ideas?
