Too much Spam coming in

Hi there,

we are running VB 4.2 on http://www.animalforum.com/forum.php (we want to upgrade to VB 5 soon) and have some issues with spam, talking big amounts - mainly from vietnam as it seems...

We got one guy that needs like 30 minutes a day to clean up and our forum is by no means busy yet, we would love to cut the time down to a few minutes or less a day and have been trying a few things with little success...

Here is what we have done so far to keep the Spam off:

-Install GlowHost Spam-O-Matic plugin
-Setup questions at registration:
-What is the fourth word in this sentence?
-What is your favorite pet?

Do you guys have any tips for us to get rid of the spam issues? Website is hosted with URLJET.

Pesky spam, happens every now and again.

I would suggest, after asking your community (As you wouldn't like them to get too upset!), attempting some of the following anti-spam measures:

- Email verification
- Captcha Image Verification
- Hard questions (Such as users would need either a vast knowledge or the ability to web search)
- Post moderation for users signed up less than x amount of hours with x amount of posts
- Ban fake email domains (List below provided by Afla1, over at http://vbulletn.com)

As for the spam problem, it is not likely to go away without a shove. vBulletin is one of the more popular bulliten boards, and spammers like to create annoying little scripts to target it specifically.

I use Q and A. Simple but very effective. Think about a question. Not too complicated nor too easy. Then either let them type in the answer or offer multiple choice. Problem with multiple choice is eventually they hit the right answer. The answer to that issue is to have rotating questions. Keep them fresh by updating them on a regular basis.
