I created a test forum a while back (well my hosting company did it for me). Since then my main forum has seen many changes I didn't make to the test forum. Lots of new content, pics etc.
Anyway, I was curious as to how I can upgrade the TEST forum to be equal to the live forum.
I'm not sure how to do this. I know there's tutorials on creating the test site from scratch, but now I need to update the test site so its equivalent to the live site so I can test upgrading to a new 4.1.12 to 4.2.
I'm not sure how to export the live site database and update/import it into the test site database, and not sure if I should download ALL files/folders from the live site and simply upload and overwrite to the test site. I don't wanna screw this whole test site up.

I would use this mod: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=231481
To make a full back of the database, from your live site. Then simply copy all your files and folders into your test folder, remembering to edit the config.php file. Once you're connected to your database for the test site you will need to change Site Name / URL / Contact Details in your ACP.

I still have a few questions, all that mod does is create a backup. Do I need to turn the main forum off before i backup the database. Do I need to change any settings in the live site after turning it off, before and after backing up the database? do i need to make any changes to the database itself after I back it up, prior to importing/overwriting it into the test site database?
I really need step by step here.

Yes that is all that mod does. But all you need to do is run it, this will give a database for your test site. Then make a full copy of your forums folder, and copy it to your test folder. Once that is done you will need to change the settings in your config.php (for the test site)
Once you get connected to the test database you will need to go to your ACP and adjust your Site URL. You may be able to do this via phpmyadmin, someone else may be able to advise you on that.
Hope you get it sorted.
