PHP Modules Help

I'm just wondering how the PHP modules work. Nothing has been released about them, there are no help topics or guides available. Can someone give me a brief introduction to using the PHP modules, the basic format etc. Is it RAW PHP code or is it similar to the vB4 plugins system? I honestly can't figure it out.
