Learning how to re-colour a theme

I've got a theme and I'm wondering if there is anything out there that can help me on guiding me though re-colouring and changing the theme colours and designs. Not changing the layout, just colouring and design. I know most of it is over-writing the old image files but I was wondering if there is anything out there that can help me?
