Hi
I just downloaded Security patch: 3.8.7 PL3
there are two folders, includes and installs, in it
I uploaded both folders and imported vbulletin-language in cp
it still says 3.8.2 in cp and forum footer. why?

there are are two more files in install folder. vbulletin-adminhelp and vbulletin-settings
should I import them in Download/Upload Languages too?

did you run the upgrade script?
yourforum.com/install/upgrade.php

I'm pretty sure you can't upgrade from 3.8.2 to 3.8.7 with just a couple of files. You need to download the full 3.8.7 PL3 package, replace everything and run the upgrade script.

The 3.8.7PL3 security patch is only if you are on a 3.8.7 release other than PL3 (i.e. PL2 or PL1 or non-PL).

If you are running something other than 3.8.7, then you CANNOT download just the 3.8.7 patch. You MUST download the 3.8.7 package, upload it to your site, and then run the upgrade.php script.

I searched but couldn't find upgrade files.

EDIT:
I just realized I have to buy the upgrade. is that correct?
they don't even let us upgrade to latest v3?

If your board is 3.8.2, you can definitely upgrade to 3.8.7. Do you have a vB3 or vB4 license? If you have a vB3 license, the only things you can't upgrade to is vBulletin 4.
Go into the member's area, find your forum under License Details and Options, press Download vBulletin 3.x, and keep the first selection selected, which is, Download Latest Version 3.8.7 Patch Level 3. After you download the .zip file, extract it, and then upload ALL of the files from that zip onto your forum root via FTP. Make sure you overwrite all existing files. After all of the files are copied over, run the upgrade.php script in the install folder. Go through all of the steps in the upgrade script, then your forum will be vB 3.8.7.

Actually, depending on when you bought your license, you might not have access to 3.8.7, but still have access to 4.x. When vB moved on to 4.x, they continued to make upgrades to 3.8 in the meantime. If you're licence expired during that stage, you could be in a situation like I am, where I can download 4.0.3 Patch Level 8 on down, but when I get to vB3, it skips on down to 3.8.5, and then I can download anything below that. No 3.8.7 for me.

let me explain a little bit
my friend (forum owner) bought this license and made a website for disable people
last year he passed away from Muscular dystrophy and we decided to keep his work alive
to be honest I don't know what type of license it was/is
under Status / Type it says: Inactive - Expired, vBulletin 3.x Forum (Owned), Expiry Date: May 18th '09
when I click download 3x there is only one option available which says: Download Latest Version 3.8.2
and it doesn't let me download 4x. it says: No versions are available for you to download as your license has expired. Please renew this license to re-enable downloads.

is there anything I can do?

What you have is an owned license (which means, you can run a forum on a single domain for as long as you want), but owned licenses only have access to a year's worth of updates. So when this license expired in '09, the most current version was 3.8.2. To get anything above that, you'd have to renew.

Navidmoj-

There are a lot of successful forums still running on vB 3.x. Unless you have a specific need to upgrade to 4.X or 5.X, you can keep using the software you own.

You can, but check to make sure you're not running any modifications that you can't do without, or that have a comparable one in phpBB. The license is owned, so you don't have to upgrade, unless you just want or need to. vB and phpBB are also quite different feature-wise (as are any other forum solutions), so be sure what your moving to is going to get you what you need. As darnoldy said, a lot of us are still running 3.x forums successfully.
