I have imported an IPB to VB 4 forum. The old forums have been around since 2005 and many users have left. I am contemplating resetting the post counters back to 0 and starting fresh. I am looking for any opinions to the downside of doing this.

The only thing I can think of us when I am admin-ing in the control panel, it's easy to find my moderators and administrators quickly without searching, as they are on the first page of top posters. I assume that would re-accumulate quickly and look the same within a few weeks, though.

Any other negatives I haven't thought of?

Other than some members possibly throwing temper tantrums that would impress a two year old. Are you deleting the posts or changing them to guest user posts or intending on leaving them as is?

Would I have to change anything?

Couldn't I reset everyone's post count from 2001 posts to 0? What other areas would that affect?

The reason that a few want the posts set back to 0 is that we have private forums for certain post counts. We effectively took a break from the forums for about a year and changed things up with the group. They would like a more "level playing field" starting the forums back up in 2013. Some with the higher post counts have moved on completely.

The forums themselves are completely private. So no guest access at all.

I may be wrong, but resetting post counts and leaving posts in place will prevent any searching of the old/reset posts when searching posts by user.

If you're referring to post count, it's a positive, as it will make members' post counts display accurate posts.
