What is Follow User?
Follow User from DragonByte Tech is a modification designed to allow members to follow one another in different social aspects of the forum. When a followed user completes an action such as a new post or a new thread, the followers receive either an email and/or PM updates based on their preference.

Follow User allows users to follow one another and get notifications when the member they follow complete certain actions.

Email and private messaging notifications, usergroup permission controls, and privacy options are all included in this product.

I think it would be good to have an option to have it added to the user profile, and instead get a notification and when you click on your notification you get sent to your profile tab for it instead of having a pm.

This is great idea!
The only thing stopping me from downloading/installing it right now is that for my forum's purpose's, as users are part of particular groups, it would be awesome if the 'group' itself could be followed in this way. So any member in GroupZ, which is subscribed to to follow, when they post a new thread, those followers are alerted.

Any chance of a feature like this being added? :)

Great mod, thanks! Some suggestions...

1. Add a link to follow or unfollow a member to postbit and member profile.
2. Add a "follower" and "following" count to postbit and member profile.
3. Create a page with a table of top members being "followed" or "following" including links to follow or unfollow each, and make it sortable (e.g: most / least followers, etc).
4. Add content types for creates album, posts visitor message, creates calendar entry, etc.

Hope my question in post #17 can be answered.

We've installed this and like it! Time will tell, but so far it's working! We have it set up so that only staff know about it, so that staff can 'follow' problem users to keep track of them better.

A feature request for a future release: I personally feel that a seperate tab on your profile for following would be better than sending PM's or emails. So to clarify, have lt similar to the Friends tab. So you get a notification (like you do for a friends request), you click on that notification and it takes you to your following tab on your profile (that only you can view).

If I understand the file structure correctly, no all that does is over rides all the other settings, like having them all Yes.

Hi everyone,

This update is basically a bugfix / performance release, with a few requests added as well.

If you like the product you can show your support by nominating it for mod of the month and also please rate it to help cancel out the users who 1 star our mods.

As always, please make sure you revert any templates you may have changed in order to take full advantage of the update.

Also report any issues you find asap so I can get them sorted quickly. ;)

Well without further ado here is the list of stuff.

Bug Fixes And Issue Fixes:

Fixed a issue where you would get a notification on posts when type is set to thread.
Fixed a issue when you updated your following settings, you would not get a re direct message informing you of successful changes.
Fixed a issue where users could be followed if they were in a usergroup that was not allowed follows.

Changes To Existing Features:

Removed the setting Is Manager from Usergroup Permissions as it was really a defunct setting.
Added html markup support for usernames on the Follow User settings page.

Additions To Product From Feature Requests Or Just Something Else Added:

Option to show signature in the pm sent to users who are following someone.
Option to show users avatars now show on the Follow User settings page.
Clicking on users name on the Follow User settings page, will now re direct you their profile.
Ability to select which usergroups can have "Private" follows.
Ability to show the users follow / following count in the postbit.
Option to choose seven different locations in the postbit to display the users follow / following count.

01-28-2013, 12:17 AM
another idea for content type to add: attachments

DragonByte Tech
01-28-2013, 12:47 AM
I don't know if that one is possible, but if you follow posts or threads and they post attachments, you would still get the notice.

Chris

Speedy131
01-28-2013, 01:01 AM
true, but a follower may not be interested in the post if it doesn't contain new attachments ... I know this probably only applies to certain types of forums
To complete it, it would also need to be able to track new attachments in an album.

Well just thinking out loud, this mod is actually pretty cool the way it is :)

Where To Show In PostBit > User Info Right After Posts (Legacy & Horizontal)

Does not show correctly , conflict with [DBTech] vBActivity & Awards v3 (vB4) (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=236973) ? Please can you check and fix on this issue ? Also try to add locations to show "Postbit Controls Area (Legacy & Horizontal)"

DragonByte Tech
01-28-2013, 07:29 PM
Then you would have to manually place it in the template and prefix the code with a <br /> or two depending on how it lines up.

As for Postbit Controls Area I don't believe I will be adding it there as a option, cause it will cause to many alignment issues in that area, but I will test it out during the next feature update and see if it will work there.

Can't get this to e-mail. I select it, it reverts back to PM.

Also am I the only one who isn't getting a redirect or is it not built in? Every time I submit anything on this, it just goes to a blank page (my board is there just the spot where the submit and form was just goes away). It saves everything (except if I chose e-mail) but just seems off.

That will get rid of that error.

We're having some issues with the latest update.

It appears only admins can follow users, even though the permissions are set up so that Global and Super mods can also follow, but they get errors saying you can not follow this type of user, but that type of user can be followed as defined by the usergroup permissions
There's no redirect after pressing submit to follow a user. Instead a blank page with the usercp.php template appears. When we click on the follow user link on the navbar the plugin has saved our changes, but it's annoying that the reidrect doesn't occur

I'm having a small problem. When I choose "Email" option in the notifications, I'm getting PMs and when I choose "Private Message", I'm getting Emails.

Can this be fixed adhoc?. If so which file I have to modify and what part?.

One suggestion: In the notifications, is it possible to have a third option "reports" which when selected will come like a report like the user tag/ user mention mods.

Thanks for the great mod.

postbit is not showing actual numbers of following / followers

I'm following 2 moderators, but followers / following both show 0 / 0 instead of 0 / 2

I did repair cache too.

<dt>{vb:rawphrase dbtech_follow_total}: {vb:raw post.total_count}</dt>

</dl>

That's it.

DragonByte Tech
04-07-2013, 12:30 PM
Try replacing the contents of that template with this:

<dl class="userinfo_extra">
<dt>{vb:rawphrase dbtech_follow_total}</dt>
<dd>{vb:raw post.total_count}</dd>
<dt>{vb:rawphrase dbtech_follow_total_following}</dt>
<dd>{vb:raw post.total_count2}</dd>
</dl>

Why it is showing up like that if the template is not customized is beyond me as it is not like that in the product xml.

Chris

Chadi
04-07-2013, 12:32 PM
I customized it to simply put both outputs in a single row. I realized it was the missing "2", which I've just added and it works now.

Since you think wrong, many have still vB3 in use.The statistics don't support your conclusion.

vBShout (vB4): 894 installs
vBShout (vB3): 173 installs

APTL (vB4): 1168 installs
APTL (vB3): 84 installs

As you can see, the amount of vB3 installation we have is a fraction of our vB4 install base. Going by the "Downloads" counter reveals a similar pattern.

Please do not assume that we know nothing about the ratio of vB4 to vB3 users of our own products - it's our job to know these things. Thank you :)

Wonderful product. Marked as installed!

Request:

The ability to add a nice little "Follow User" button (which would appear in postbit, signature, wherever)

I installed but users wouldn't even know this exists unless I linked them to the follow users page, where they have to manually enter in a username to follow (which is difficult for the users who have exotic usernames)...

That has been requested before and is under consideration for future versions.

I ended up having to disable this mod as it was causing severely high server load. (Specifically, mysql)

We're on Linux/Apache, fcgi, PHP 5.3.21, vb 4.2.1

Our load averages went from under 2.00 to up to 35.00+ after enabling the mod.

Would love to know if anyone else has had this problem and what the fix may be.

Thank you

No one else has reported such an issue with the mod. I am not sure why it would produce that on your setup.

Update

Hotfix: PHP 5.4 Compatibility fixes

This does not guarantee the mod is error free on PHP 5.4, but it will take care of the reported errors. Thank you all for your reports :)

So anything further on getting a follow button from the user profile screen or even integrate it into your hover mod as well?

Also on the popup when you click on a users name in a thread.

Thanks for another great mod. Just need some more bells and whistles.

It's an interesting idea, but linking it to notifications seems like it could get very annoying very quickly, especially if you follow a lot of people. Imagine if Twitter emailed you every time someone you followed tweeted! Why not just a page which shows posts from folks you're following? Seems like a much more elegant and intuitive way to handle it. You could keep the notifications for those who really want them.

No, this is for the vB4 series. It was never made as a vB3 mod.

I know I'm a few years late into this post, but had to ask: is it possible to limit the "follow" to threads started in a specific forum?
