This happens every so often, the site gets targeted by hackers looking for "weak" passwords...

No doubt they are trying the "username" as the password, and also the 10 or 15 most common passwords out there... (ie- "password", "1234", "12345," etc...)

This is why it is important to have strong passwords.

The built in "strikes" system in vBulletin makes true extended brute-force attacks impossible but unfortunately there are always people with weak passwords.
