Hello,

I am getting absolutely hammered with spam on one of my forums and i have filled in the question and answer bit in the vb options but I am still getting loads of new users register and then post spam posts up....

What can be done to stop this?

Have you gone to Human Verification Options in the admincp and made sure Register is checked (or have you tried registering to make sure the question is displayed)? Are your answers very simple numbers or something? If so you might try ones that are a little more complicated.

You could also try this mod: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=289463

The new version of XRumer appears to be able to bypass many of the native vBulletin human verification checks. I say this only because I have noticed lately alot of forum board owners stating they are getting hammered with spam.

Has anyone looked into how they are defeating particularly, the Q&A? Also, they seem to be able to validate bogus email accounts. How can they be doing this?

In our experience, using GlowHost Spam-O-Matic seems to do the trick. We also signed up for the keys for both spam databases.

In addition, a register time check function helps (ensuring that filling out the registration form takes longer than 25 seconds).

We also use moderation tweaks that look for suspect words in posts from new members with less than 20 posts. If any words are detected, the user is automatically placed into a moderation queue, which makes cleanup VERY easy.

If memory serves me right, a while ago I remember reading about how the spammers were working on automated programs that were capable of limited ability to bypass a capcha.

Facebook has recently had a group receive over 90,000 new members in a matter of hours. The ability to register new members like this is of concern.

Clearly some work has been going on with automated systems, to enable the spammers to bypass the methods to keep them out.
This site is not the place to discuss how this is being done, but it has been noted.

Similar things are going on in regard to scammers. The ability of scammers and spammers to use automated systems is being watched carefully, as it is a real danger, and involves vast sums of money.
