How to remove total pm from notification box

Hello all. I need as much space as possible to the left of the notification box (not sure if that's what it's called), for a banner inside the navbar. How do I remove the "total" private messages statistic from the notification box leaving only Private messages: unread 0. Like in the attached pic. Thanks.

click private message link you will see inbox and sent items pick them all scroll down and delete them

Thanks. But I'm asking which code to remove or edit, to permanently stop displaying the statistic "total" private messages. Not how to delete messages.

If I remove this section of code $vbphrase[total_x_nav_compiled]leaving it as 2=""what I see in the notification box is:

Private messages: unread 0, .

Is that a reasonable way of doing it? And if so how can I remove the coma and space between the unread messages number and the period.

Edit phrase private_messages_nav from <a href="private.php{3}">Private Messages</a>: {1}, {2}.to<a href="private.php{3}">Private Messages</a>: {1}.No code needed to be deleted. Thanks for the help.
