View Full Version : Forum Home Enhancements - [DBTech] DragonByte Forum Tabs v1 (vB4)
DragonByte Tech

DragonByte Forum Tabs organizes the forum home page and it's forum content into Categories and AJAX Powered Tabs and includes a customizable Favourites Tab and a template editing free install.
Uses
Organizing the forums on the forum home into Tabs and those Tabs into Categories allows administrators to organize their content and reduce the length of the forum list. With AJAX powered Tabs as well as one click Favouriting of forums to add to a user's personal Favourites Tab, DFT makes navigating the forum home a more pleasant and customizable experience for users and admins alike.
Category Tabs can also have different styling allowing for very different looking sections to your forum home page. Tabs are remembered when coming back to the forum home page.
Installation is simple and includes no template edits.

Very strange. I've just downloaded and tried reimporting the XML on a test site and it works fine for me. Perhaps the download was corrupted somehow when you downloaded. Can you try redownloading the file and seeing if that fixes the issue. Has anyone else had this problem?

That's a great Mod! Been searching for something like this for a while.
two bugs? i found
1. that X-Button - in the bar telling you don't have any favourites set yet - is not working, the bar will not disappear unless i put something in the favs.
2. Tabs within a category don't show up, i have to set them as a global tab to appear.
and some request for future versions. is it possible that each user can set a default active tab wihtin the user control panel? and is it possible to have global tabs only without a category set? i only have one category active to show the global tabs.
Thanks!
PS: sorry for my english

Glad you like the mod so far. :)
Will look into the two bugs, I've an idea what's causing them.
The Pro version does allow for setting a per user default tab in their control panel.
The second idea of having Global Tabs only without a category set I'm not sure of exactly what you mean. The Pro version does allow you to hide the Category Tabs and it will run effectively off the first Category Tab and what AJAX Tabs are assigned to it and the Global Tabs as well. Is that you are wanting?

Hi everyone,
Thanks to a number of bug reports we've worked out some of the issues to do with DragonByte Forum Tabs (DFT) and so we are releasing version 1.0.3 which contains those fixes and a number of other issues we came across (for both the Pro and Lite versions). It also adds a method to prevent the main Category Tab and AJAX Tab from being deactivated which caused a number of errors.
The full Changelog is here:
Feature: Unable to deactivate either the 'Forum' Category Tab or the 'All' AJAX Tab.
Fixed: Template that wasn't cached.
Fixed: Unstickied Category Tab showing next to the 'More' Tab when the Selected Category.
Fixed: Non-Global Tabs not showing up under their parent Category Tab.
Fixed: No Favourites and No Default Tab notices not dismissing correctly.
Fixed: Issue where on all Category Tabs and AJAX Tabs being deactivated would cause a PHP error.
Fixed: Cookie setting error.
Fixed: A conditional that conflicts with the fix for non-Global Tabs above.
Thanks as always to everyone for their feedback and suggestions.

Cool. There is a manual to help out here:

The manual is written with the Pro version in mind, but many of the principles apply to the Lite version as well. Let us know if you have any more questions. :)

Tonight's release of DragonByte Forum Tabs to v1.0.4 fixes a number of minor issues as well as adding a couple of mini features to further enhance #DFT (http://www.dragonbyte-tech.com/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=DFT) . The main new features is that now Notices can be added to display in a Category Tab, thereby showing it across every AJAX Tab in that Category. Full fix list is as follows:
Feature: Can set in the Admin Control Panel the default setting for 'Add Forum Automatically to User's Favourites' on adding new forums.
Feature: Can set notices to appear when viewing a category.
Fixed: Stuck on tab when viewing forum in a mobile style.
Fixed: Several issues with notices displaying incorrectly.
Thanks as always to everyone for their feedback and suggestions, I'll be looking at incorporating them in the coming weeks.

Do you have this problem if you look at the forum with a Default style? What settings have you adjusted during the setup? :)
AJAX Tabs need to have a parent Category Tab, and both need to be marked as active.
If you want to create an account for me to look at the settings in the ACP, please PM me the website location, along with a username and password and I'll take a look. :)

Is it possible to change the location of the tabs to be higher up, as indicated in the attached image.
DragonByte Tech
04-07-2013, 02:20 PM
Maybe. It would mean either relocating the template variable:
{vb:raw template_hook.forumhome_above_forums} in the FORUMHOME template, or more likely will need to force the rendering of the DFT code before the other mods utilize the same template. You could try it by changing the plugin execution code on the Cache Templates plugin from 5 to 4.
I've not had chance to try this myself, but I suspect option two is the better one to try, and I'd test it on a test setup first.
Let me know if it solves your problem.

neither of the above affected position, moving the hook just moved them all in same order, I didnt want to mess too much, as i dont have a test site I just tested it on an unused style. would probably be better using a different hook or the option to place in different areas.

Thanks for trying it out.
The only other option that might work (depending on how the other mods use the same hook) is to change a section of the /dbtech/forumtabs/hooks/process_templates_complete.php file.
Find this line:
$template_hook['forumhome_above_forums'] .= $templater->render();
Replace with:
$template_hook['forumhome_above_forums'] = $templater->render() . $template_hook['forumhome_above_forums'];
Remember this will need changing each time there's an update. I'll see if there's a way of forcing this in the mod, but part of it will depend on the way that the other mods use the hook as I mentioned above.
I wish I could suggest using another hook, but the problem is that there is no other hook fitting where you want, as all three mods use the same hook code. I hope that makes sense.
Let me know how you get on.

Hi everyone,
Released a bug fix (v1.0.8) for DragonByte Forum Tabs (#DFT) to fix issues with compatibility for a number of non DBTech mods. This centres around a new setting which allows you to choose to not use the Quick Load methods DFT traditionally uses for loading AJAX Tabs and use a slightly slower version (for most forums) which will fix the compatibility issues we were having.
Feature: New Option to choose type of AJAX load.
Fixed: VaultWiki incompatibilities.

Am I doing something wrong? I have the pro version, I bought like 6 months ago and since then have put all this a side. I am now back, and ready to build my site.
Say I make a category on my forums and call it sports. In the sports section there is say 4 forums called NBA, NFL, NBA & MLB. I want to make a tab and connect it to my sports section so when they click the tab is will show all 4 sports section. But I can't seem to get it to do this. OR the tabs can not do this? Or is my pro version out dated?

Hi DB,
Looking good, it will certainly enhance my readers experience so they don't have to keep scrolling to get to where they want in forum.
How does this affect seo and if so would a latest thread marquee help above the forums with this?
DragonByte Tech
06-17-2013, 06:06 AM
We've designed it to work with mods like vBSEO (there is a setting in the ACP that can be activated to maintain compatibility), but anything within stock vB SEO should work fine.
As far as SEO generally, I'll dig deeper into the impact on a site. I've not looked at it any further than maintaining compatibility with SEO methods within vB.
Thanks for the questions.
Matt :)

Before members save their favorite tabs a yellow message appears at the top of the forums saying "You currently have no favorites saved. Click..."
We'd like to personalize this a bit and have it say "Hello <their username here>, You currently have no favorites saved. Click..."
What is the correct code to do that? I think it's $username or something right?
ozzy47
08-28-2013, 03:18 AM
First thing edit the phrase, dbtech_forumtabs_no_favourites and change it to this,
Hey there {1}, you have no favourites saved. Click the <img src="dbtech/forumtabs/images/add.png" title="Add Favourite Image" /> on your favourite forums to add them to your favourites list
Then edit the template, dbtech_forumtabs_tabs search for the following:
{vb:rawphrase dbtech_forumtabs_no_favourites}
And change it to this:
{vb:rawphrase dbtech_forumtabs_no_favourites, {vb:raw bbuserinfo.username}}
You can always edit the phrase to your liking, just remember {1} will be replaced with the users name that is viewing the message.

They should appear there. Maybe there is a slight issue with your CSS styling, or perhaps the styling you are using is casuing an overlapping or 'new line' unexpectedly. If you get chance, can you PM me here or at dragonbyte-tech.com (my username is Mokonzi) a link to your site so I can take a look at the CSS myself? :)

It looks like you have categories and tabs setup. The following bits of information might help:
The first tab is the 'All Forums' tab and will display everything. The Favourites tab will only display what favourites a user has selected.
The way the system works, when a user first goes to the forums for their first visit, they will either see the default tab within a category, or they will be dropped to the first available tab, which is the All tab (which appears within any category, as does the Favourites tab).
Navigating through the other tabs within a category will change what the tab is that is displayed on their next visit.
The final thing to remember is that each AJAX tab that you create can be made 'global', which means it will appear in every category.
I hope this helps you figure out what you need to change. If you still need some help, PM me on my personal account at www.dragonbyte-tech.com (My username is Mokonzi) with some access details to your site including your Admin Control Panel, and how you want things organized, and I'll take a look and see what needs adjusting.

Are you using a modified style? It may mean that the templates for the mod need adjusting to match the settings for the custom style.

Hotfix: PHP 5.4 Compatibility fixes
This does not guarantee the mod is error free on PHP 5.4, but it will take care of the reported errors. Thank you all for your reports :)

Have you cleared any caches on your server? Looks like the style hasn't been applied properly. Do you have a custom skin at all?

Usually getting it to work is just a matter of tweaking the style IDs and CSS classes. If you have any issues let me know and I'll do what I can to help. :)

Hello! I've been trying to add this to our site for a few days and no tabs I make seem to work. I have added forums to the staff tab and added the staff usergroups to view it but when I click it the category shows up, but the forums within it are absent. Also, when we click "All" it doesn't load the entire forum. It usually takes a hard refresh. I have it disabled for now but I will re-enable it if you feel like helping. Thanks for the great addons!

This sounds interesting. :)
First thing to check with the tabs is that you've included the main parent category along with the forums you want to use. So as an example let's say you have the forums below (a - indicating a sub level and the numbers reflecting the ID of the forums):
Category 1
- Forum 5
- Forum 6
-- Subforum 11
-- Subforum 12
- Forum 7
Category 2
- Forum 8
-- Subforum 13
-- Subforum 14
Category 3
- Forum 9
Category 4
- Forum 10
To make Forum 10 and Subforum 14 appear, you'd need to have Category 2, Forum 8, Subforum 14, Category 14 and Forum 10 selected. Usually forums not appearing is related to not including the parent forums and categories.
Regarding the pages requiring a hard refresh to appear, it might be you need to disable this setting:
AJAX Tabs Quick Load
That setting is designed to speed up the AJAX page load by only loading forum data. But some other plugins and mods require hooks that don't exist in that quick method. Disabling it might help fix that.
If those don't work, feel free to PM me some login information and I'll take a look at your setup. You can do that here or to my username Mokonzi on the http://www.dragonbyte-tech.com forums.
Hope this helps.

Was this hotfix applied to the pro version on your site as I have the latest version installed of this Mod 1.09 running vb4.4 with PHP 5.4.27 and it was working fine until I applied the latest patch from vb4.2.3 to vb4.2.4 now I get the same error as above.
I have had to disable all modifications to get into the ACP then turn this Modification off otherwise its a blank page with this message.

Hi there,
We are unfortunately prohibited from discussing our PRO versions here on vb.org. Per vb.org rules we can only do so on our own site. Please post any questions/issues on the pro version there.
On another note we handle support at our site before vb.org support to ensure our customers get the best support experience. It is also easier for us to perform support there as we have a ticket system that allows us to track requests etc. As a result while support at our site is typically handled within a few hours, support here on vB.org is generally significantly more delayed as there is no good way for us to keep track of our 100+ product threads here on vb.org.
Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

This is an excellent modification DragonByte Tech. It compliments the chatbox well though I had to change a few lines of code to get it so the chatbox appears with every tab selection. Minor issue because I had to position the chatbox below the forum notices.
Thanks so much!

A fresh copy of the jQuery library is now only downloaded if one has not been downloaded previously. Requires updating of all other affected DBTech mods to take full effect.
