Have found the following /public_html/forums/.htaccess file on our server:
AddHandler application/x-httpd-php5 js
AddHandler application/x-httpd-php5 css
I notice there is no such file in the original package download from vBulletin.

Is this needed for vB operation?
If not, is this something to be concerned about?

We've just managed to remove a malware attack (which was buried in a bogus .css file) and are looking for any left over vulnerabilities.

That is not default vbulletin. You may want to ask your host if they added it there in order for your server to be able to handle js and css files.
