Preview Text is only null in MySQL

What causes this and how can I fix it. Under CMS I have my default length to 125 but it never saves anything under the previewtext field in the database. I am trying to use that field to show preview text in an image slider. If I go and manually put text in the field in phpMyAdmin it shows so I know the code is working fine. I can't can't get any text to save in there. All of my articles are promoted from threads.

If you don't set a Preview Break in the article, then the previewtest field is set to NULL and the normal function that figures out the previewtext, based on the previewlength, is used.
