Hi all,
Is there any hack I can obtain that changes the user ranking system so that users obtain ranks through ratings? Perhaps a dropdown box and you can vote the user 1-5 or whatever, like the thread rating system. Thanks,
-Nanda Stone

More along the lines of user rating system......
If comeone does do this, it would be very nice. Many sites have a buy/sell/trade forum. Unfortunately, there are way to many dishonest people out there, and it would be very nice to rate members which have proven to be trustworthy. It could even be somewhat like ebay's user rating system. This is very much needed at so many different sites.
Thanks,
-JRW

This sounds similar like the karma hack made by Overgrow (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/member.php?action=getinfo&userid=219)... which is a pay-for hack if you will
http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26997
look at that thread for details.

I did a hack like this the last days
User can be rated 1 to 5 points. If a user votes another one twice the old value will be updated.
Ratings are displayed like this in the users profiles and posts:
http://www.exchange-board.org/forum/images/1points.gif
http://www.exchange-board.org/forum/images/2points.gif
http://www.exchange-board.org/forum/images/3points.gif
http://www.exchange-board.org/forum/images/4points.gif
http://www.exchange-board.org/forum/images/5points.gif
Users can be rated in profile, see attachment.

This would indeed be valuable to get rid of those people whose credibility is an issue...
I like the karma hack, am willing to pay, but no reply for overgrow. I'm waiting until someone has something like it!

I'd be interested in this one, too - I also tried to contact overgrow, but he seems to avoid these forums nowadays ... no reply via email, either :(

Still working on it. I just added 2 more functions which I'm currently testing offline:
Let users decide whether they want to be rated by others or not
Show who rated but of course not how ;)
Actually I'm not really sure about these functions, but some of my users requested them.

Here are the two sections I regard "finished".
Users with higher rating (I'm going to change it from rating to something else when I think of it :\) and posts influence another user's rating more heavily when they rate them. It's something around:
changeToUserRating = (myPosts/postTotalDivider)+(myRating/ratingTotalDivider)+1
with a few more constraints (can't go below urNegativeRatingLimit or above urPositiveRatingLimit rating) worked in.
Anyways, tell me what you think.
Attachment 1 is the main sorta thingy :)

Attachment 2 is the title admin section.
More sections soon, working on them.

I'll add that to my features todo list ;).
Just wanted to mention that it's different from the stars due to the fact that it's driven by user rating. I'm sure you figured that out but I just wanted to piont it out anyway :).

You mean different images for different styles right?
The images are totaly customizable, you can use whatever you want, even change it to normal text titles if you like.
I'll try get the different images for different styles done later. Let you know when it's ready.

I currently have the hack in working condition it's just that I'm trying to implement more features. If you guys just want it as it is then I'll try and get it ready.
I have made quite a few changes in around 6 normal files, 6 admin files and 7 or so templates so I'm not really sure how to make installation instructions for it. The tables are also modified and some templates as well. This is my first hack so I'm a bit confused as how to go about it. Any advice?
Thanks.
hey man if you want i can help you put it together, i have put some stuff together, and would be more than happy to help you out on this. and its really seems like i great hack;)

Guys,
What do you reckon the chances of me getting perhaps $10 for the hack once I've fully finished it and added lots of features?
well if you ask me... umm maybe some. cuz its at a good price, but if people are going to get a hack like this they are going to go for the overgrowns kama hack, but i can tell you i would bye it from you...;)

Oh... I thought Overgrow wasn't selling his hack anymore. Is that right? I'll be adding lot's more features to make it more worthwhile :)
really? i heard they still are but not publicly, but go for it i would like to help you out if you are interested, for some strange reason i have time since i have about 1 member on my board... me;)

I'm not really pro-selling hacks. Notice how many quality hacks there are in the hack forum, many of them taking lots of time. The purpose of a hack is so one person shares their idea and work with other people. That's what these boards are about imo.
true true but i know alot of people on these forums have made hacks but have not posted them or will ever do so.

Okey dokey then...
So, do you guys want it now or when I have put a few more features into it?
The features I'm looking at implementing right now are:
Different title graphics/text for different styles.
Custom titles.
Top 10 Rated Users.
I also have some minorish changes to make and code the clean up and comment. I don't really have much time to work on it so this might take a few more days. Whatda think?
hmm.. well i could wait for you to finish the hack, but i am interested to see what the code looks like

I think the top 10 rated users would be nice to have, maybe as a seperate .php link or something. But I would really like to see it in whatever incarnation it's in now. =)

Hi guys,
You can view a demo forum with user rating enabled at:
Test Forum (http://www.veggiekids.net/forumuserrating/showthread.php?threadid=1)
Tell me what you think and PLEASE report ANY bugs you find. Improvement/feature suggestions would be great too.
Thank you.

What's that about the picture path? It's not supposed to look pretty, it's a demo. Is it the vBulletin header your talking about? I left that in there....
EDIT: Eep! I see what you mean. I'm working on it. Sorry but I left absoulute links to my server in there :o

This is the correct full path: http://www.veggiekids.net/forumuserrating/images/ratingstrip/
This is for the pictures.
Recommendation: It would be less obtrusive if once you rated it didn't reload the page, maybe just say: $users karma (or whatever you'll call it) has increased/decreased. in the small window.
This would require a larger window I suppose, but it would ease the annoyance of those people who want to rate every post on the thread or something.
nandastone
10-31-2001, 04:47 AM
Hmmm... just wanted to point out that they are rating the USER not the post.
ender
10-31-2001, 04:52 AM
Does this work the same as the Karma hack where you can rate any and every post by the user, but only once per 24 hours?
If that's so I still hold my position. It would relieve the stress of reloading the whole page every time. Anyway, the use of reloading is to keep current on the state, I understand, but from 1 person's rating the total Karma doesn't change drastically, so if it only displayed something like what I have bolded above it would be easier on the whole.
Oh, I'd be willing to donate $5-$10 for your craftsmanship on this hack once you release. Though I recommend you make giving money compulsatory rather than required.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm going to sleep, I'll keep up on this thread tomorrow. Happy coding! :)

No, it's purely for rating users. Something on the scale of overgrows is a bit much for me right now, I'm not a great coder and this is my first hack. Once I have finished this hack I'll start work on a add-on for rating posts.

Hmm... I'll think about this, I relise what your saying but I like to have everything up to date.

I've scrapped that idea, I'm going to make it free but encourage generous people to donate a teeny bit for the hours of coding I'v put into it *nudge nudge* ;)
you are a great person, open sourse rules, so when do you think this will be ready?
ender
10-31-2001, 07:45 PM
I was incorrect here are the Karma rules:
From Overgrow.com
-Members can approve or disapprove of a post by clicking on the Karma icon
-You can give 10 Karma awards every 24 hours
-You can only give one Karma award per post
-Users with more karma and a longer time registered will give more karma points with each click than a new member with no karma. An old well respected user might give 7 points per click while a new user will only give 1.
Here is a rundown on those rules specifically:
-You can give 10 Karma awards every 24 hours
I suppose it makes a table that contains a history of your last 10 Karma awards and the date you gave it out in Unix time, you just need to minus 86400 from the current Unix time and then determine if the time they gave the award is >= to that... so
AwardTime >= (CurrentTime - 86400)
Then you have to decay the history by one and add the current entry, maybe every time a vote is made the first mySQL command done is to delete any history entries that match the above statement. Then do a check for the number of history entries the user has, &c.
-You can only give one Karma award per post
That requires another table entry, or another column within the karma table. Probably the more efficient route is to add a new table, lets call it karmavote [just like pollvote] that contains the post#, and the userid.
And I think you said earlier that you have the last feature. I think you have the above but I'm not totally sure because I haven't seen the code yet and I haven't been able to test it throughly enough.
