how do I get wordpress and forum to run from the same directory?

Hello,

I've got both wordpress and my forum running from the root directory.

The problem I've got is I can't turn on the wordpress permalink from default ( /?p=123 ) structure to Post name ( /sample-post/ )

When I do it doesn't find the posts, can anyone assist please?
