Customising look of forum block/widgets

I really hate the way the forum blocks/widgets look at the moment with that huge chunky frame around the contents.

I have an idea of what I want but don't quite know how to do it. Could anyone give me some pointers?

I have attached an image of a before and after regarding a forum block. I've highlted the bits that I need to remove.

So everyone has just left their widgets/blocks looking the same? They are butt ugly (no offence VB).

I've tried removing colours etc via the style vars but it leaves borders and removes the top heading bit too as it's all combined into one!
