Version 2.2.0

The new Activity Stream for VB 4.2.0 is very nice but it feels like it is missing something- and what it is missing is a sidebar. Ideally at some point VB will release a custom sidebar built just for the Activity Stream but until then this quick mod will let you use the built in forum sidebar on the Activity Stream.

As of version 2.0 besides just working on the Activity Stream the mod can now add a sidebar to ANY vBulletin page including forums, threads, groups, albums, who's online, forum leaders, and more. In fact you can easily add the sidebar even to custom pages from custom mods.

New Features

Now works on ANY vBulletin Page (except blogs which have their own sidebar)
Option to align sidebar with page content or top of page
Option to Disable Sidebar Collapse Option (By Usergroup in 2.1.0)
Collapsed sidebar state now "remembered" on different pages
Option to enable Sidebar by Usergroup
Option to disable Sidebar by Forum (if enabled for forums/threads)
Option to disable Sidebar in specific styles
Options to disable sidebars if mobile devices detected*


NOTE: To enable mobile device detection options you must install the Mobile Browser Detector (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=292704) mod.

You can enable or disable the Sidebar Anywhere independently of the forum sidebar but they will both display the same content (blocks.)

NEW - If you need to have different blocks on different pages check out this add-on (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=296104).

You must have at least 1 block setup and active for the sidebar to show.

Unlike most of my other mods this mod is enabled by default upon installation. Be default it is setup to show only on the Activity Stream and register.php pages.

I am aware there is already a mod out there "Everywhere Sidebar" by another coder. This is completely different code and I made this because my "Staff Online Sideblock (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=284617)" mod did not work on Sidebar Everywhere but it does work on this mod.

This mod requires at least VB 4.2.0 to work on the Activity Stream but should work on older VB 4.x.x versions on other pages.

"minversion" means "Minimum Version" so it says 4.2.0 Alpha is the Minimum version.

4.2.0 is greater than 4.1.12 because 2 is greater than 1. The 12 doesn't matter in this case.

The Activity Stream is built into 4.2.0, this only adds a sidebar to it. The Activity Stream as designed doesn't "live stream" - it will tell you there are X # of new items but you have to click on that notice to load them into view.

I have installed your mod. And uninstall it for this erorr. You see that erorr because the block is still there. I have delete the block and the erorr gone. And ofcourse i will mark as installed when i use it.

the mod is well coded and works perfect
I have installed this on every site I have updated to date,
some sites I am waiting becasue of complex navbars
I still have to figure out all the In's and outs to this new Nav manager
most likely it's conflicting with something else

Thanks, this works very well.

Only thing I've noticed, is that if you "collapse" the sidebar in the Activity Stream, the cookie doesn't seem to get saved...you can refresh the page and it will no longer be collapsed. This is different to the normal forumhome sidebar which will set a cookie and keep the sidebar collapsed.

Did you get me? where i tell i have problem with blog block? I am not blaming you, Did i? And i am not telling you that your mod has problem. Its my forum thats getting in problem when i installed your mod. Dont get me wrong. Actually i have also have same issue with another latest mod( activity stream on sidebar) .

And that sidebar block is making this problem. I have delete that. And now i installed your mod. And it works without any problem!

This mod simply adds your existing forum sidebar to the activity stream.

The preview text on the sidebar itself should be exactly the same as the preview text when the sidebar is shown on your forum home. I'm not sure what setting changes that, if any, but in my testing they are identical.

Thanks for this mod. I like the idea of the Activity Wall is great and this mod adds a bit of variety to the page. I hope they make the page more interactive like the other live wall mods I have seen and installed. Love your work!

Go to plugin manager and edit the AS Sidebar Edits plugin.

Just as an FYI, I thought this was a great idea and I installed it, but I had to make mine inactive and go back to the "Recent Posts" sidebar because the members almost unanimously prefered to see the first sentence of the post in the sidebar like the recent post sidebar.

I had exchanged the Recent Post [regular forum] sidebar with the new Activity Stream sidebar. Some didn't like that new format so I went back. They wanted that first sentence to show.

Is it showing up on any pages? By default it is only enabled on The Activity Stream.

Do you have the forum home sidebar collapsed? It uses the same cookie so it will be collapsed as well.

If you don't have the forum home sidebar enabled it is likely you don't have any forum sideblocks enabled- at least one sideblock must be active for the sidebar to show.

Can you post a link to your forum?

I have an "Articles" page which is content.php. The sidebar does not show up on that page. Otherwise the Sidebar Anywhere works as expected. Also, I noticed the page has it's own settings for the sidebar width which is locked in the grid manager to a max of 300 pix. My Sidebar is 400 pix in the Forum Sidebar Width. Any ideas how to get the sidebar to show up on this page?

I didn't include CMS pages in this because CMS pages are made to use widgets.

The sidebar width is using the forum_sidebar_width stylevar which should work on all pages the sidebar shows on. What page has its own setting?

Excellent. I've been looking for something to this effect for a while. The similar hack didn't do it for me, I can't recall why but it was problematic. This does the job nicely!

One minor issue. When using a unique skin, it appears to not grab all images.

However, once you click the non-showing image to collapse the side-bar, it then shows up. Clicking again to show the side-bar allows the image to show this time around.

I copied the location and pasted it directly to the address bar so I could physically see where it was looking and noted it has doubled the format extension.

I move onto my next thread/different subforum/etc. and instead of the side bar is a blank column where the side-bar would be if it were visible... so my viewers aren't gaining anything if they collapse the bar as the space remains (as white space) on a page change.

I can't reproduce these issues anywhere else. Have you tried it on the default style? If you want to PM me admin access I will take a look when I get a chance.

Yes there is a never-collapse option.

Experiencing the same error as karlm. The collapse button doesn't show up except on the forum home, and when the sidebar is collapsed from there then you have a wide blank space where the sidebar would otherwise be when you click through to a page set to have it.

Ahhh... those are collapses for each individual forum block. In my tests it is remembering individual collapsed blocks between pages which is good.

But I've never seen an option to disable them- do you have them disabled on the Forum Index sidebar somehow?

The relevant code is in red. There is no conditional around it so I'm pretty sure no option exists to disable them.

No. I was previously using Everywhere Sidebar which had the option of changing the positioning but that wasn't perfect on all pages. What I'm looking for is a way to change the forum home page sidebar and use your add-on for the other pages where it's perfect.

This does not seem to disable the vertical collapse in either the default style or in my custom style. The "-" button is still visible and clickable and the entire sidebar collapses.

I tried it but on my custom style I have sidebar width var set to 300px (because of ads I have that are that width). It works on forum home but on all other pages shows as the default 270px. Let me know if I am missing something.

It's just the code that identifies what pages are what. For example, showthread, index, etc.

My bad- I understand how "THIS_SCRIPT" works- that is in most of my mods. I meant in my programming of this mod I didn't come across anything that would let me choose which forum-blocks load per page. I know everywhere sidebar has that option but at this moment I don't know how I would begin to implement such an option- truth be told this is a fairly simple mod all things considered- I was not planning on complicating it by allowing per-script options.

Now this is being ignored. So I assume it is because of the incorrect template name, which is actually Smooth Red. I have tried enclosing in quotes but this doesn't work either.

Is this a problem with the specified template name, or is the problem likely somewhere else?

True. But that's not gonna help that cough of yours...

In the meantime:

AdminCP -> Style Manager -> Style Variable Editor -> Sidebar -> forum_sidebar_width

and repeat for cms and blog if you have the suite and use those elements.

FYI - I am not able to change width. I am using custom style.

My bad- I understand how "THIS_SCRIPT" works- that is in most of my mods. I meant in my programming of this mod I didn't come across anything that would let me choose which forum-blocks load per page. I know everywhere sidebar has that option but at this moment I don't know how I would begin to implement such an option- truth be told this is a fairly simple mod all things considered- I was not planning on complicating it by allowing per-script options.

Smooth Red sounds like the name of a style... I am certain the Template Name of downloads2 is not "smoothred."

To find out the template name go to Admin CP -> Settings -> Options -> General Settings -> Add Template Name in HTML Comments -> Yes

Now open the Downloads II page, and view the source in your web browser.

The first or second line will be something like:

<!-- BEGIN TEMPLATE: iframer_bop5_vb4 -->

In this example the template name is iframer_bop5_vb4. (An example from my IFRAMEr mod.)

FYI - I am not able to change width. I am using custom style.

To use it on Forum Index turn on the default vBulletin Forum Sideblock. It will be the same thing.

For fear of asking another silly question, but why would my sidebar be on the right of the CMS section, but on the left in the activity and forum modules?

Looks to me like a vBulletin issue and not specifically one of this mod, but not sure..

EDIT, ok I understand the CMS doesn't use the LHS/RHS sidebar configuration at all and this is rather embedded in the grid structure... more work for me to do :)

After further investigation it seems setting the width via the stylevar forum_sidebar_width does indeed work to re-size the sidebar width on all pages.

Added option to prevent collapsing of sidebar by usergroup (including FORUMHOME sidebar)

If upgrading be sure to go back to the settings to set which usergroups have permission to collapse the sidebar. By default all the built in usergroups (besides banned) have permission.

You can edit the forum block in Forum Blocks Manager and restrict which forum's posts/threads get pulled from for each block.

These are all possible now.

Left or Right will work based on what you have the default forum sidebar set to (Admin CP -> Settings -> Options -> Forum Sidebar and Block Option)

The width can be changed by the stylevar- the same stylevar that changes the default sidebar width- it has been mentioned in this thread before- I think it is in Stylvar Editor -> Sidebar-> forum_sidebar_width. Just search for "sidebar" there's only a few.

Any other changes - like the gap width can be done via custom CSS in additional.css or stylevars if they exist.

For example this in addtional.css should narrow the gap-


#sidebar_container {
padding-right: 10px !important;
}


Note padding=right is needed for the siebar on the right of the page. If on the left of the page use padding-left.

I think there is one more thing I need to know now before we put your mod live and give it a go.

We use Logician's WebTemplates and as per your instructions, I have added the following.

But I am unsure as to what the second part should be. We normally use the default template default_basic_theme1 or Default Basic Theme but adding that to the box still doesn't work. :(

The template I checked after doing this is Test - adding the text;

Thanks, ones again. Actually I was looking for something to make sidebar to work somehow on vBA , this did it with no hassle. Just a tiny 4-5 px uneven with the rest of vBA lining. Don't mind tho. but if there is a way with no troubles for you , please advise

I added a custom code on FORUMHOME, above {vb:raw sidebar}..
But when I go to other pages it is not included on the sidebar..
How can I include my custom code show on other pages too?
My custom codes only include html, vb:raw codes, and vb phrases codes..

As always great MOD.
Works very well but I have a small issue.

The sidebar shows properly on most pages with sidebar activated however I found a small problem with the Calendar page.
The sidebar shows up properly when viewing the calendar in general or the detailed event view.
Only when editing the calendar event the sidebar gets moved all the way to the bottom of the page and the forum footer moves to the right top of the page as shown in the screenshot.

Any suggestions to fix this?

Please go to the Admin CP -> Plugin Manager and edit the plugin: Sidebar Anywhere Edits

Find the line:
if ($vbulletin->options['sidebarposition'])

and change it to:
if (!$vbulletin->options['sidebarposition'])

(add the exclamation point)

and let me know if it works, please.

Had to disable the mod as for whatever reason if enabled on forum pages when trying to edit and quick save it won't work. Have to click go advanced.

Did you download the right version? You need to download Sidebar Anywhere by BOP5v210.zip

Then once installed you have to go to the mod settings and enable it on specific pages- by default it is only enabled in the Activity Stream.

Instead of? I'm not sure how you would disable the blog sidebar, maybe via css display:none. You can add blog as a custom page, it works, I've tested it.

If it doesn't work on the default style after the mod is reinstalled it can't be a template issue- the mod is made to work with the default templates so reverting them should never break it.

For the sidebar width it works on my forum (Here I set the width to a narrow 150 for an example on the activity stream)

In Admin CP -> Settings -> Options -> Forum Sidebar and Block Options you can choose Left or Right. Note this only works for the newer version of this mod- "Sidebar Anywhere" not Sidebar for Activity Stream.

The width should obey the stylevar forum_sidebar_width.

Looks like I left out a special CSS template if the tagcloud is used.

For now you can fix by going to Admin CP -> Products & Plugins -> Plugin Manager

Edit the template Sidebar Anywhere CSS

Erase everything in the plugin and replace it with this code:

In Admin CP -> Settings -> Options -> Forum Sidebar and Block Options you can choose Left or Right. Note this only works for the newer version of this mod- "Sidebar Anywhere" not Sidebar for Activity Stream.

The width should obey the stylevar forum_sidebar_width.

To determine the template name go to your Admin CP -> Settings -> Options -> General Settings, and turn on the setting that puts Template Names in HTML comments...

Then reload the custom page you want the sidebar to appear on, view the HTML source. The first comment for the first template at the top of the page is going to be the template name you need.

Disable the setting once you have found it.

Sorry about that, I don't have any RTL boards to test off of.

You can test RTL layout very easy:

Go to Admin CP -> Languages & Phrases -> Language Manager

Add New Language (English)

Name it RTL Test or what ever you like

But make sure you select (Right to Left) in the Text Direction filed



Go to Admin CP -> Plugin Manager -> Sidebar Anywhere Edits plugin

Find the 4 instances of:

$vboptions[\'sidebarposition\'] == 0

and change them to

$vboptions[\'sidebarposition\'] == 1

See if that fixes the issue.

Reinstall is good advice.

Instead of? I'm not sure how you would disable the blog sidebar, maybe via css display:none. You can add blog as a custom page, it works, I've tested it.
I'm using the suite version of 4.2.0 and I'm interested only in using the Blog portion on my blog site. Will this mod of yours suit my purpose of using it as a customizable sidebar block on my blog page? I do hope I have asked my question in a manner that you will understand.

This mod doesn't allow for customized sidebar blocks. It displays the same sidebar blocks on every page.

You can use it only for your blog if you want but vBulletin designed the blog to have their own sidebar.

One more question if I may for either you or anyone else here who may know, is there a way to modify or manipulate vBs sidebar in the blog portion to allow for the addition of HTML or some other way to add sections to the existing pre-packaged blog contents? I just want to add simple html links and small images with links or just some text etc.

This mod should not be re-named from ANYWHERE but instead to Most Anywhere. It does not work on the vB 4.2 Blog page. If anyone wants to make a mod that works with or in addition to the vB version that comes with the blog contact me. Am willing to pay. It MUST actually work though. Do you have the problem on the default style?

To get the default style go to Admin CP -> Styles & Templates -> Style Manager -> Add New Style and create a new style with no parent style. This will be the default style.

Then go to Admin CP -> Settings -> Options -> Style & Language Settings and give permission for users to change styles (if it was disabled) so you can change to the default style to test it.

If you don't have the problem with the default style then obviously the problem is due to your custom style, not the mod. So sorry, I cannot trouble shoot custom styling issues but I am not a style expert, I really have no idea what may be broken in your custom style and I do not have time to log into your site and look around. Had you posted a link to the site with the issue so I can see it happening there is a small chance I may have noticed something obvious, but you didn't. FYI - A screenshot isn't very helpful when trouble shooting styling issues.

block_html_4:kalleis

nothing else is required, however, if you decided to hide it, all you need is to add page extension to it like this: kalleis.php

Thank you very much! I was able to enter it! The problem was the value of the page kalleis wrong (it's called "banner").
Instead I can not do the same thing in the pages of the form of Easy Form
The value of the form.php file is "forms".
