View Full Version : Anti-Spam Options - PlayThru

Are You A Human
05-08-2012, 10:00 PM
Description

Are You A Human (http://areyouahuman.com/) is a free CAPTCHA alternative that uses simple games to replace annoying CAPTCHAs. Our tool, called PlayThru, stops bots with fun by focusing on being simple and intuitive. We then use a proprietary algorithm to determine if the interaction with our game is from a human. Play samples of our games here (http://www.areyouahuman.com/demo).

PlayThru has been featured by MSNBC (http://www.technolog.msnbc.msn.com/technology/technolog/simple-games-could-replace-annoying-captchas-733000), Engadget (http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/03/playthru-hopes-to-kill-text-captchas/), MakeUseOf (http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/playthru-game-based-captchas-website/), ReadWriteWeb (http://www.readwriteweb.com/hack/2012/05/a-gaming-replacement-for-those-annoying-captchas.php?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+readwriteweb+%28ReadWriteWeb% 29), and others.

Technology

PlayThru supports both html5 and flash, and also works on mobile devices. Visit our forum (http://support.areyouahuman.com/areyouahuman) for more technical details.

PlayThru also supports two different methods of display. Embedded mode displays the PlayThru in-line in the form. Lightbox mode only displays the PlayThru after the submit button is clicked. More information on these options can be found in our blog post (http://areyouahuman.com/new-lightbox-method-for-playthru).

Installation

Installation is simple and takes only a few steps. Please register for a free account (http://portal.areyouahuman.com/signup/vbulletin) and follow our detailed instructions located on our installation page (http://portal.areyouahuman.com/installation/vbulletin).

We are always available for help and support at our forum (http://support.areyouahuman.com/areyouahuman).

Once installed, we would greatly appreciate if you rate us and mark the plug-in as installed.

if that works, then it will be a nice alternative to that other stupid captcha. Very rarely do I get it right first try.

Thanks, I'll give this a try. Anything that helps combat spam is a plus. I'm beginning to think the other methods I use have actually prevented real people from joining so I'll give this a wee test run :)

I tried it, easy to install, works great.

It does not show up until you actually click to register - than it pops up.

Nice - thanks!

This really is very nice. Works perfect. A great solution for that other Captcha. I am just not sure how that would play with multi languages sites, if it will follow user defined language choice. Otherwise, it's a perfect solution. One can finally have a sigh of relief. In my main forum I had to finally moderate every single action.

P.S. I can foresee this dethroning ReCaptcha almost everywhere

Is it better to use Embedded ot Lightbox?

Lionel

I use the lightbox option. It kind of keep registration form clean

Boofo
05-12-2012, 03:42 AM
Thanks, I'll try that. I thought maybe the embedded one would take the place of the one in vb in the same spot.

Lionel

That's what it's supposed to be, at least I think. I went straight for lightbox option.

Language localization is something that we don't support yet, but we will in the future.

As for lightbox vs. embedded, we strongly suggest using the lightbox setting. Internal tests have shown that end-users prefer the lightbox and find it more intuitive.

Malpheus, if you're having issues with our plugin, please let us know in our support forum (http://support.areyouahuman.com/areyouahuman) and we can help you there. Any and all feedback is appreciated!

I think it's a great tool. Unfortunately I can't use it: I attract a lot of international users and English only instructions could be a deterrent.
I suggested to them a language switcher and they seem to like the idea. So, let's hope.

Great mod thanks for sharing, however I'm seeing lots of the errors in my logs such as:

Same here. Apparently it isn't important enough to be looked into by them. I will be uninstalling this since the support leaves a lot to be desired.

Sorry for the slow support! We will be more active with monitoring this feedback from now on.

The logging error described by hugh_ has been fixed - the mod is now updated. Also, disabling javascript does not circumvent the PlayThru. It will prevent it from loading, causing the user to fail authentication.

I've already installed the previous version of this (THANKS - no more spambots!!!). I don't see instructions on how to update; do I need to do the full installation instructions? And is there any harm is not updating, if I don't care about my log file?

Are You A Human
06-08-2012, 02:51 PM
tcarr9, you can update by simply replacing the file "packages\ayah\ayah.php" in your installation with the file "upload\packages\ayah\ayah.php" from the download. However, the only difference is that unnecessary messages aren't written to the log file. So if you don't care about your log file, there's no need to update.

New users are getting this message when registering with Internet Explorer.

"The PlayThru game was not completed. Please try again."

If you're using Firefox or Google Chrome to register everything works fine.

Any help?

We're working on finding a solution for lightbox, but in the meantime, you can switch the display mode to "embedded" via portal.areyouahuman.com and it will work with Internet Explorer.

Sorry for the inconvenience! We'll let you know when it's been fixed.

Great idea for a captcha system, liking it a lot more then other captcha systems out there. Hopefully should help with the influx of bots I've had lately.

Installed this today and the users like it. (I am running a contest, so we use Captcha to prevent auto entries)

The only issue being reported is a few people have reported a "gateway timeout" error when it tried showing the captcha. is this normal or are you just having an issue today?

Are You A Human
09-28-2012, 12:23 PM
scottct1, the "bad gateway" error you're seeing is not something we can control on our side. The gateway that is being used to connect to our servers must be slow. You can read more about that error here: http://www.checkupdown.com/status/E504.html

Couldn't get it to work on Lightbox (I wonder if it's because I'm using https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=254438&page=2 ?).
Anyway works fine on the post. Have rated and marked as installed. :)

Thanks! Was looking for a way to make verification less tedious!

Edit: Is there any way you could release a version with the flash games uploadable to one's own server? It would be a nightmare to lose ability for new people to join if your server went down.

Disable registration optimization and see if lightbox works. Also make sure in your admincp/settings/human verification manager is set to disable.

If I set it to Lightbox and set Human Verification manager to disabled nothing happens! You can just register without any verification. I'll try and remove registration optimization to test it some other day, though to be frank if the two were incompatible I'd rather just have embedded with the registration optimization.

Edit: Tried turning it back on through Human Verification Manager whilst it's now in lightbox mode and for some reason it appears to be working now, just annoyingly it shows "PlayThru Human Verification:" in the page, even though it's in lightbox mode. Shouldn't be hard for me to remove that text from the template though.

Edit2: Doesn't look like a simple template edit because it all seems to be attached to a one phrase function rather than being a function attached to text and other gui stuff. Hmf.

Mate did you disable RO in admincp/plugin and products also?

Mr Anarch

Mate did you disable RO in admincp/plugin and products also?

Do you mean Registration Optimisation by RO?

No. As I explained I'm not willing to turn Registration Optimisation off (might do it some other day when i'm less busy but I doubt it will change it). It's only a single template edit for a start off and uses the same function for checking human verification as the default template for registration anyway. (It's all managed by {vb:raw human_verify}). I don't see how it would miraculously change. I assume it's possible to change what {vb:raw human_verify} calls up, but that's obviously not going to be a 2 minute edit in the way I was hoping.

Anyway, it's functional in lightbox mode now (with it still turned in in Human Verification Manager), but it's messy because the text still shows up as noted previously, so I might go back to embedded until I'm in the mood to mess about with it unless somebody offers a simple fix.

Mr, Anarch, here's a simple fix to remove the label, but it's a bit of a hack for now.

To remove the "PlayThru Human Verification" label, comment out line 76 in "include/class_humanverify_playthru.php:

// $output = $output . "<label>PlayThru Human Verification:</label>";

We'll work on making this label disappear automatically for lightbox in future releases.

Thanks alot. Makes a big difference to the neatness of my registration page!

I tried to test PlayThru on a well known proxy (hidemyass) but it wouldn't show up. Is this a case of your IP blocking the proxy (aka it's banned from your servers so can't be read off of them)?

I would still like to see a version where you can upload the flash to your own server! ;)

Are You A Human
10-09-2012, 09:19 PM
The way that web proxies serve pages prevents our code from being executed correctly (or at all). So that's not something we can fix.

It's unlikely you'll ever be able to host our service yourself, since we don't want to release our verification code, and by hosting the game files, we can seamlessly push down updates.

Thanks for using PlayThru!

I'm getting the same error as ss@solidsignal

In the vb org menu to the right this plugin is listed as vb 4.X, but when it's installed it's ID'd as vB 3.8. It created an error when trying to register making it impossible for anyone to register. I uninstalled and the problem was solved. So is there an updated version. is anyone else using it with vB 4 successfully?

Not a bad idea but how about adding more "games" like snake or something where the user has to "score" at least two times to complete registration. Games that require complex user interaction like snake.. they have to constantly move the snake to eat things should be the most optimal.
