[DBTech] vBNominate v1 (vB4) [AJAX]

[DragonByte Tech]

vBNominate is an advanced nomination system. Several different types of nominations are available and it is fully automated to keep your users engaged and interested in your communities activity while keeping maintenance down.

Uses
As admin you will be able to create several different types of nominations. The nominations can either end with the top nominated items winning or a separate poll will automatically be created with the top items.

Once the poll is completed the nomination is updated automatically with the results. No manual intervention is needed on your part! You can specify the type of nomination to be run or you can let it run on several different types of items like threads, polls, blogs, etc.

The nominations system will make it easy for users to have competitions for the best post, thread and more while browsing the forum. No need to go to a special page to vote, all voting can be done for any post from any thread via AJAX.

Instructions
Here are some basics on how to get the nominations started.
1) Make sure you modify the usergroups that will be allowed to nominate.
ACP->Usergroups->UserGroup Manager
2) Create a rotating nomination
ACP->DBTech - vBNominate-> Create Rotating
An example, if you want a weekly Thread nomination, set Type to Thread, Cycle to Weekly, End Date way far in the future, like Dec 31 2058. After you submit new Nomination go to step 3.
3) Edit new Inactive Nomination
ACP->DBTech - vBNominate-> Current Nominations
You should now have an inactive nomination. Edit it if you need to make any changes then set it to active.

You should now have a Nomination link in your postbit. At the end of the week it will automatically end and start a new one on the day you specified.

The nominate button you have looks the same as on our site? The variable there is if you want to manually put it somewhere else besides the default template hooks.

I'm not sure without seeing what the error is. If it was a database error it should of emailed the technical contact what the exact error was. Did you get that email? If you did post it so I can see what the cause is.

I was thinking about doing that but I thought about how large that could get heh. Imagine you have 8 or so nominations running that involve thread/posts/users/avatars/signatures. As well as the block to display that I'd worry about the database hit. That said, I'll add it to our feature request list and look at adding it in the next version with the ability to disable it. I guess if you only run a couple nominations and have extra sql power to spare it would be a nice feature :)

Yeah, I was already thinking about adding that. Been asking a lot why it's not working when in reality there were just no active nominations for that user :)

Only problem is users wont know if there is a new nomination available or not. Since the rotating title is the same they wont know if it's a new one or the one they already voted on. Maybe a color difference on the link and popup text.

Yes, either version will do a monthly user nomination that will either end by getting auto scored or by creating a poll with the top users to be voted on.

We run a Fortnightly art competition. It would be great if this could be expanded, so that the nominate button will only be shown in active "weekly threads" and not only forum categories.
Once that weeks nominations are complete, the button would be removed.

How hard would it be to add "two weeks" to the drop down box for length of nomination.
And also to a dd a thread number rather than a forum category?

Great mod in theory, but not perfect for our needs.

Looks like you didn't upload all the files. Redownload the package and be sure every file gets uploaded.

Problem still persists? Open the settings page in a new tab (this will provide the full URL) and on the file not found page copy and paste that link in your reply.

Sorry about the problem. Yes, I found that out troubleshooting a users site last night. I'll work on getting it fixed today. I'll post a new package when it's fixed.

I just released 1.2.3 which should fix the problem. Once you vote on a thread nomination it should pop up a message thanking the user for the nomination. Let me know if it doesn't.

I have a question. I have a thread nomination going but every post in the thread has a nominate dropdown. It says nominate>thread and it works but I'm just wondering if this is standard.

Also I noticed in the settings the thread nomination hook is set for postbit_start and the post nomination hook is set to postbit_userinfo_right_after_posts. The only nomination I have is under the avatar next to the infractions. Is that postbit_start? Is there any way to get it up near the thread rating dropdowns?

Hi Danny, I haven't been able to find a way to tap into the top administrative toolbar, that's why I put it in the thread tools at the bottom.
Right now it displays in every post if you use combined. This is because you have the ability to nominate a particular post/user/avatar/sig and you can't do that with one main dropdown at the top of the thread.
If you only have thread nominations and don't plan on doing any other types, you can change it so it doesn't use the combined list and set the thread hook to use postbit_start. That should get it the closest to how you want.

If you look at the nominations settings there is a tab for Popup Options. On that tab is the setting called Combined Menu. If you set that to no and change the Thread Hook Location to be postbit_start then it should only show 1 dropdown option above the first post. That is only if you have the nomination set to a type Thread.

ACP->Plugins & Products->Plugin Manager
Find the section: Product : DragonByte Tech: vBNominate (Pro)
Find the plugin: Member Info Profile Block
And uncheck it to disable it

On the Nominate General Settings you tell it what forum to create the poll thread in. It should work like any other poll thread.

It happens when an unregistered member goes to http://www.************.com/forums/vbnominate.php?id=10

I don't know what the id=10 is used for in the vbnominate system or if unregistered is some type of spider or bot indexing pages because no member with any regular activity has triggered it off. It's combined menu.

Thanks for this great mod :) I am trying to do a couple things and could use a hand.

1. Is there a way to only display the nomination button on the first post of assigned forums?
2. In the admincp how do you correct the links in the current nominations so it will take you to the threads? They are adding the admincp before the showthread.php which results in the 404 error page.

Thanks for this great mod :) I am trying to do a couple things and could use a hand.

1. Is there a way to only display the nomination button on the first post of assigned forums?
2. In the admincp how do you correct the links in the current nominations so it will take you to the threads? They are adding the admincp before the showthread.php which results in the 404 error page.

I'll fix the links and come out with a new version.
If you want it to only show on the first post try this
Open the file dbtech/vbnominate/hooks/postbit_display_complete.php

Find the line

I had some issues figuring out why the "nominate" button wouldn't show up.
It seems me as an admin can't nominate and therefore the button didn't show up?
Once I logged in as a regular user the button was there.

Is there a way to move the "forum home" block at the bottom of the forum or even in another dedicated page?

PS. You should change the options for the LITE version in the feature list. It says widget and side block are also available in the LITE version. :)

There is no real front end for the nominations. I'm going to build one the next version. If you have one of the blocks showing it will link to the completed nomination where you can view the results.

One of the links is optional, you can disable it. Copyright footer links do not damage SEO in the google panda/penguin updates. They CAN damage the company who owns the links if they are placed on many undesirable sites. (This is what caused a lot of wordpress theme creators etc to be hurt by the updates). Fortunately our site is linked to by some of the largest communities on the web and has an extremely favourable SEO profile - there are no SEO issues with having links to our site.

The feedback is appreciated though, sorry that the two links vs 1 link is a dealbreaker for you, hopefully you'll re-examine the cost to benefit ratio again in future. The vast majority of people we've asked feel the extra features more than outweighs the few extra words at the very bottom of the page. Obviously I tend to agree with that position!

If you have any feedback on the SEO issues discussed etc feel free to PM me with further info and i'll look into it more, in case there is something i'm not aware of.

That is what I was talking about.. It damages you for posting the links so why do it? I guess before the more outgoing links you have may lower your link weight a bit but now the problem is really for those companies including the links on their products. This was my point. If it ticks off the buyer and also damages your seo then again, why do it?

It just gets to be too much. Say a client has 3 of your mods installed.. I understand you deserve something for having a lite version and the mods are great. I just really hate having all the links..a single for a mod is ok by me. This is just my opinion anyhow so no disrespect intended..

I think you should consider how awesome DBT mods must be if you're using so many that it affects your footer. ;) I guess they could only make 1 mod and then only have 1 footer entry... But yeah, then you'd be missing out on everything else they make.

I wouldn't think of it any more than if you installed 10 mods from 10 different authors that drop something in the footer. That many of them are DBT mods tells people that you use and trust them enough to use that many of their mods.

I'm not arguing the footer entries can get out of hand, not at all. =) Just that you can't blame DBT for writing so many excellent mods that you want to use them all. =)

We all should consider there are some real excellent coders here who provide us with excellent FREE Mod's to make our forums better and more interesting for our users. One of them is DBT for sure.
They deserve a link in the footer to show their hard work but yes I agree it can get a lot overwhelming when using several different mod's.
Maybe one thing coders could consider when they offer several different mod's is to combine the links in one line instead of links for each product.
Example: product1, product2, product3 presented by company/coderX.

Do the vendors have user accounts? If they do and are tied to a specific vendor type usergroup, you could make a user nomination with only that usergroup and any post they make will have the option to nominate them.

You can make it so each user can only nominate once per nomination. It doesn't have the ability to restrict to the IP.

I tried this mod out. It seems decent, but there are a few things that I couldn't get to work or find, and the mod seems to be lacking some features.

1. In the AdminCP there is a welcome message that "displays on the vbnominate front page" Where is this front page? Earlier in this thread you said there is no "front end" at the moment. Does that mean this AdminCP settings does nothing currently?

2. On vb 4.2.0 PL3 the polls do not seem to work. I can get the nominations to work, and I can choose between Auto Score or Polls. When selecting polls, no poll is created after making a nomination. I have selected a forum with which to make the poll in the AdminCP options.

3. Can we move the forumhome block to its own dedicated page? I saw where you explained how to put it below the forums, instead of under the navbar, but it's own dedicated page would be MUCH better.

4. If the forumhome block is turned off, where do users see nominations?

What would be the conditional to add, so that a user could not nominate their own entry.
Possibly not show the image on a users own post.

I have sorted it now.
If anyone is interested in the code, here is what i did, so users cannot vote for their own posts.
I opted to not automatically insert code in the options/settings.
Then in my postbit_Legacy template, i added the following code where i wanted the nominate button to show
<vb:if condition="$bbuserinfo[userid] != $post[userid]">
{vb:raw vbnominate.combined}
</vb:if>


Hopefully this is of some use to someone, and maybe be implemented in the next release.

Nope did not help. I did a clean install after I did my backup thinking that something could have errored in the first place.

The mod is working cause we were able to generate a poll post but nothing was in it because no one has been able to nominate.

I do have one issue though. I created a nomination. I can see it being an Admin, but no one else can see it.

I checked the permissions on the current nominate, and the rotation areas, and they are set accordingly. I've selected just one usergroup, all of them etc..

I can't get the regular members to see the Vote button..

Is there something else I'm missing?

OK!!! I finally messed around and got it deployed. the only problems not is the combined button covers my post thant. Where and how. We hardly ever use our blod so I wanted this area that would be if we took at the blog are. so I would be happy to remove that blog lick in the post-bit and replace it with vnominate

This could be the same problem, did you set the usergroup permission so the usergroup would be allowed to nominate? There's just one option for nominate when you edit the usergroup settings, it's called Can nominate

Currently you can't change your vote. I will put in a feature request on our site to make it admin selectable to allow users to vote for something new and replace their old vote.

If you are sure there is at least 1 current nomination running and you have access to nominate then it should work. If it's not I'd have to get a temp admin account to check out what's going on. Sorry about the problems.

We actually have a large number of clients who choose to do just that, but we recognize that not everyone has the resources for that.

You can post it, what did you have to modify?

Guests shouldn't be able to nominate unless you set it in their usergroup settings. I don't know how well that would work though as it's coded around nominations being done by users with id's.

Well, I want to disable nomination for guests posts as there no use as I can't reward winning guests.. Some are deleted users and may have been nominated before deletion, so at result when poll created there is NO username!

What happens when a nomination ends or is won?

Does the user get a notification? Is a thread created? Etc. What happens when it finishes, besides being listed on the nominations page? Using Autoscore for example.

But when my users try to nominate for Post of the WEek (I don't have threads, avatars etc set up, only Posts) a popup opens and says "Page Not Found"

So a few hours after I made a "TESTING" rotation, a nomination poll came up in the designated nomination forum.

I did this around 4pm yesterday afternoon and it's 330am (for me) and it's now showing a poll.

But still when I try to nominate something (I only allowed nominations from Staff Forum), it says Page Not Found.

I followed the directions here. I just want a weekly post of the week nomination thread. No thread, avatar, etc. nom just Post nomination.

Could you please double-check all the files have been uploaded correctly? You should drag and drop the contents of the "upload" folder to your forum's folder in your FTP client.

100% certain I installed it the way the instructions said.

I've got other apps from DB on there including Thanks, and User Tagging and those work fine. I was going to install a shoutbox but I wanted to get the nomination in first.

Again if you want me to give you access to a spare admin account I can.

Ok. How about this, investigate just from the admin account I'll PM you, make sure my app settings are correct in admin panel and do a test run yourself to double check that I'm not losing my mind!

And if it still doesn't work out or you see what you want, I'll get you the FTP account afterwards?

Just set up for testing by staff - but the Forumhome shows the block to non-staff :D . Not to worry, have switched that off ....

I use a custom postbit and tried added this shortcode {vb:raw vbnominate.thread} to the location I want it. But nothing happens. I tried adding to at many locations on the custom postbit and nothing.

Will it only work on postbit and postbit legacy. Is there a place to add my custom postbit template name so its shows up there?

That was the problem.

I had a borked install i thought i could just overwrite. It was a remnant from a prior version where I'd tried out the CMS and the uninstall would die because of the packages/vbcms directory.

Sorted it out, uninstalled properly, reinstalled.

No, it's as soon as I open the BBCode Manager. Almost as if one of my custom BBCodes is trying to call vbnominate. If I disable vbnom, everything goes back to being normal.
