View Full Version : Miscellaneous Hacks - [DBTech] Forum Live Feed & User Wall v1 (vB4) [AJAX]
DragonByte Tech
02-17-2012, 11:00 PM
Forum Live Feed & User Wall lets you see a continuously updated feed of activities on the forum, with a powerful set of customisation options for sources of information.
Uses
If you've wished for a Facebook-like feed for your forum, this mod is for you.
This mod adds 2 distinct features to your site. First a live feed showing actions performed by everyone on the forum, from new threads and posts to things like new avatars or signatures, your members can customise their feed and keep up to date with everything that's going on, right as it happens.
Secondly every user also has their own wall that displays what they have been up to. This lets users see what their friends have been doing and join in!
With advanced privacy configuration options and configurable preview options for each content type, this mod compliments other modifications like InfoPanels and produces a more detailed and verbose feed of the happenings on the forum.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please remember to click the, https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/external/2015/08/2.png button to the right if you installed the mod ---->
What does 'Marking As Installed' do ?
* It helps you to stay on top of updates - members who have installed modifications will be notified by us whenever new updates are available.
* For security issues - vbulletin.org will contact all members who have installed a modification whenever a security issue is brought to their attention.
* Marking a modification as installed also helps us know how many people are using our work, giving us extra incentive to provide more features and new modifications.
We appreciate the support!

Nice that works so let me get this right this does not put the update status under your username in postbit? It just gives me a wall full of feeds?
DragonByte Tech
02-18-2012, 04:20 AM
That is correct :)
We may implement additional display options in the future, but they will most likely be revolved around the profile and not the postbit.
Postbit space is rather limited, and we want admins to be able to allow people to post a microblog (think Twitter) length status - hence the default 140 characters ;) - without worrying about the postbit looking like a giraffe.
Hopefully that made sense :)

Sounds good ;)
Is this Addon show new albumpictures and does it show bbcodes? (Video, Smilies ...)
DragonByte Tech
02-18-2012, 11:38 AM
There's currently no content type for Album Pictures.
It does show BBCode, all the BBCode that are allowed in "Non-Forum Areas" as per the BBCode settings.
Smilies are also supported :)
That being said, due to the fact that each content type comes with a "Preview Cut-off" setting, some BBCode may become invalidated and not parse correctly.
Example: Let's say you have a quote tag that contains more than 300 characters. When it cuts off the message, the closing [/quote] will get removed and the start tag will be left in place.
Hopefully that makes sense :)

You can compare the feature lists and screenshots to find out what's different - personally I'm not so good at selling things. That's more my partner Iain's thing.
I'll link him to your query and he'll answer as soon as he's able :)

Whats different to this mod?
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=277545
From quick look at it, with DBTech mod you could set numerous options feed/privacy wise. You can decide which feeds you want to see and to whom you want to enable to see your feeds.
In pro version you also get whole comment system, where people could comment anything in feeds.
Coding wise, DBTech has produced good code so far. I'm not telling that this other coder produces bad code, I'm just telling that in my experience DBTech produced good code so far and I believe they will continue so.
On the other hand, only sure thing is that you try both mods on your testing site and see which one you like more. :)

Hey,
nice work. I install the lite edition but i have some requests.
1. Statusupdate from forumhome. I put the textarea in the block template and it works fine without the maxlength.
2. A little preview at the block would be nice.

That mod seems to be a basic feed of some forum info.
Our mod is a full live facebook style wall, with user customisable content, content previews, privacy permissions for who does and doesn't see posts about you, a commenting system (in pro), as well as a full user-wall system where each user has their own wall filled with events relating only to them - again just like on facebook.
Hope that clears up the difference ^.^

Your best bet is to suggest this in a thread over at the support forums to make sure it gets noticed and taken into consideration each time we're designing a new version =)
As far as adding support for 3rd party products, that tends to be something we do after we have added the feature requests and 1st party integration, so it will probably be a bit before those get added unless there are several requests for the integration from pro customers over at DBTech.
We try to put features that everyone can make use of ahead of things like 3rd party integration that most people won't use, unless a number of our customers request the feature. For obvious reasons requests like that tend to be given priority :P

This mod is aware of all BBCode that can be used in non-forum areas as per the vBulletin options. We have no further control over BBCode parsing.
Note that if the text between BBCode tags go over the preview limit, BBCode will not parse correctly.

Hi Fillip,
testing this and must say I like it very much.
I think the ability for the user to delete their status's is a must and displaying comments under/at bottom of post in thread would be great.
:)
Also a fix for resizing images on wall
add to additional.css or dbtech_livewall.css
.blockrow div.livewall_preview img {
max-width:600px;

Not impressed with mod, what good is it to post a status update when you cant post a comment to it in the lite version.
Lite version looks nothing more than a chat board... looks like we are going to have to uninstall this one unless there are some decent updates coming forth in the next release.

I would like to see an option for it to works with the forums.
Posts in thread from Live Feed
Giving the user the options of the forum view or the Live Feed view by clicking the navbar!
Somewhere down the road maybe an option to turn of forum and just view the live feed.
Now we are talking dynamite :) ...with additional ongoing additional pages :p
Maybe a Pro feature.

Nothing in the feed for when people add or remove a friend?That's because vBulletin does not currently store when a "relation" (i.e. contact or friend) was formed, so there's no way for me to tell if the friendship was new or old.

It still posts to the wall (and more importantly to your User Wall), letting people keep up to date with your status.

Not sure I follow you here... chat board? The lite version can't be used as a chat board...
I think you may have completely misunderstood the mod to be honest. The point of it is to provided a "Live Feed" of what's going on in the forum/with users. It lets users keep up with recent posts/actions in real time. If that's not what you're looking for this isn't the mod for you =)

You are out of your mind.
This is one of the best "Facebook Wall" plug-ins to date. I will be upgrading soon to the Pro version for the commenting as well. You can't blame them for not wanting to give the cow for free here...
If I could have only one feature added to this, it would be that the "Users Wall" would be a tab located in the User Profile section. This would encourage more people to use their pages just like in Facebook... please please please! Make it so!

I'd like to see an option for the Entries per page (Forum Live Feed)
eg. show Last

3 hours
6 hours
12 hours
24 hours
or similar.. :)
and possibly simlilar option for User Wall
eg. show Last
1 week
2 weeks
1 month
else pagination up to a set limit
or similar :D

Just a little note that for feature requests if possible it's best to post them in the support forums at DBTech - we have a custom system there to track them to make sure they don't get lost/overlooked. Posts on vB.org tend to get lost in the shuffle/forgotten >.<

Looks quite great.
Is it possible to Follow a particular user?
We were hoping to use it like a 'soundoff' table where the latest show or release is announced by a user part of a particular usergroup with access to post. Then any other member can 'follow' that user to ensure they get notified of each show/released. :)

We were hoping to use it like a 'soundoff' table where the latest show or release is announced by a user part of a particular usergroup with access to post. Then any other member can 'follow' that user to ensure they get notified of each show/released. :)The Pro version does let you view a "user wall" but it does not let you follow a user in that manner. This is due to the fact that LW simply reads off the other tables (say, for instance the posts table for Posts) and doesn't create entries of its own. That makes it extremely challenging to do notifications, but extremely easier to add new content types and does not depend on hooks being available.

Would be a great way for our setup to run this mod for our needs...There is no profile wall, you can disable the navbar tab via the settings :)

What do the links in the code "http://ajax.googleapis.com...." do in the script? They preload on pages and slows it down some. Is that a file that could be pulled from the server directory instead? It fetches jQuery, the JavaScript library I use :)
Having it remote hosted is faster than locally hosted, because you can only fetch 1 locally hosted element at a time, whereas you can fetch locally hosted + remotely hosted items at the same time :)

Also no problem with the advanced editor, only the quick reply has this problem.If you are having similar problems with the Quick Reply then this further strengthens my reasoning that it is in fact not a problem with our mods. Your site is set up in a way that you are unable to use AJAX without it "breaking" special characters in that way.
Unfortunately I have zero experience with this because I have never had to deal with it - all characters work out of the box with a default install of vBulletin so I really don't know where the issue lies :(

Forum Live Feed & User Wall v1.2.2:
Feature: Status updates can now be deleted
Feature: Added profile tab for user walls (does not automatically update, but contains links to the full "live" user wall). This tab can be turned off via a setting in vBulletin Options.
Fix: Will no longer interfere with vBAdvanced.
For the same reason as edited posts etc don't update, deleted status updates won't vanish from other peoples' walls until they reload the page / it vanishes off their feed naturally.
This is to preserve resources and cannot be changed at this time.

DragonByte Tech
03-06-2012, 01:58 PM
To my knowledge it's not possible for me to detect what tab you are currently viewing on the profile page, and it would be a waste of resources to have live updates if the user is not even viewing the updates.
Plus, I personally feel that it's sort of a waste to have TWO pages doing "show updates from user x" - especially considering the link to the person whose profile you are viewing is plastered all over the User Wall tab :)
That being said, the ability to submit a new status from your profile in a sideblock is a good idea and we'll look into it for a future version :)

In regards to permissions issue, there is a forum "spy" version of a live feed, similar the the new Activity Stream, that only displays posts in the live feed to folks who have access to that thread.
This looks very cool but without the ability to keep non-subscribed members from viewing private forums / threads, I can't use it. It sounds like the Pro version will only let us determine who can view the feed and who can't - not by thread permissions. Is that correct?
Another great mod, however. Thanks.

In both the Lite and Pro versions, Live Wall will not display threads that are in forums users cannot view, or lack the password for.
If they can view the forum and thread titles, but not thread content - or if they can only view their own threads, then Live Wall will still display the thread.
The Pro version lets you flat out exclude forums from showing up, so if one of your forums matched the above exception then you could exclude that forum.

Strange. That's not what I am seeing. I have signed in as a user without permissions and completely logged out, yet both times I could still see the private threads posts in the live feed. When I click on the thread link it tells me I don't have permission to read that thread, but I can view the contents of the post in the live feed wall.
Maybe I have something set wrong? ty
By the way, I plan to buy a few Pro mods from you after trying the lites. Not only are they all cool, but your support here has been awsome!

This private forum is working correctly in the live wall feed and I see "Can View Forum" is set to '"no" for registered users, so that must be the difference.
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/external/2012/06/1.gif
I do want some of the private forums to show on the forum homepage, but I don't want registered users to be able to read the threads.
The difference between them is, one is for moderators (not visible) and the other private forums are for folks who have subscribed (paid) for access to these forums, so I want the nonsubsribers to see that there are forums they can't read unless they subscribe.
If you are looking for some input, I wouldn't mind seeing the thread title but no content in the feed for forums with "Can view forum" and "Cannot view thread" permissions. That's what Valter does with his Advanced Forum Stats mod.

I thought I would test it out and ry to customise it. But..
How do I display the status box on showthread?
I have copied this -
<vb:if condition="$vboptions['dbtech_livewall_status_maxlength']">
<div class="collapse" style="padding-bottom:10px;">
<h2 class="blockhead">{vb:rawphrase dbtech_livewall_whats_on_mind} <a class="collapse" id="collapse_dbtech_livewall_status" href="{vb:raw relpath}#top"><img src="{vb:stylevar imgdir_button}/collapse_40b.png" alt="" /></a></h2>
<div class="blockbody formcontrols settings_form_border" id="dbtech_livewall_status">
<div class="blockrow">
<input type="text" class="primary textbox" name="livewall_textfield" data-command="status" style="width:100%" />
<br />
<div style="margin-top:6px;"><input type="button" class="button" name="livewall_submit" data-command="status" value="{vb:rawphrase post}" /> <span class="dbtech_livewall_smallfont">[<span name="livewall_remainingchars" data-command="status">{vb:var vboptions.dbtech_livewall_status_maxlength}</span>]</span></div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</vb:if>
And put it in SHOWTHREAD where the status box shows correctly, however it doesn't work. I can type in it but it doesn't post the status update.

Because the image resizer doesn't work with AJAX-added images, it's a design flaw in your image resizer :)
So would you suggest a solution?
It does, provided the video embed is within the cut-off limit (both the start and end tag).
So how do I increase this cutoff limit?
Then change the settings for the Content Types :)
Would you prefer it if it stretched your page? :p

You can't assist on how to change the font? Perhaps with some better coding you guys could have stylevars to make this simple? Not being able to change the font seems like a design flaw but hopefully it's something you can improve in future releases.

If your skin has customised the sidebar_content_link_color / sidebar_content_link_hover_color stylevar and yet it still doesn't work, then there is something else up with your skin and I am as in the dark as you are. I have not only no idea who developed your skin, what it's called, what customisations it applied...
You can't assist on how to change the font?For the simple reason that if we were open to providing customisations of our products, that's literally all we'd be doing.
All we can really do is point people in the direction of where to go, and adequately explain why we can't assist with the customisations. I understand that I've failed at both of those tasks, and for that I apologise.
The templates to edit are dbtech_livewall_block_entry and dbtech_livewall_block_entries to boost the font sizes used in this mod.
So I need to buy a mod that is not working as I expect to begin with to get support?Not at all. Under no circumstances does posting Lite support requests in our Lite support forums require any form of purchase, furthermore support is not included in the Pro licence fee - the licence fee is exclusively a measure of the time it took to create the modification.
While I obviously can't speak for the future, I very strongly doubt you will ever see anyone from DBTech asking you to pay for support - unless the tradition of paying for the development time of software goes away globally at any rate, which it shows no signs of doing :)
I'd like to see how your support is first before I invest any money. Hence the point of lite products right?An argument could be made for that, certainly. Personally, I put out Lite products to give people an idea of the product itself, not my support.
I suppose everyone has their individual reasons for using a Lite product first while testing for the Pro version.
I want all the BB code to parse so it doesn't look bad like it does.That's impossible to ensure unless you display the full post on your wall.
If a person posts a post that is 300 characters long, the first 3 characters is and the last 4 are , then it will display correctly for a cutoff limit of 300.
However, if they post a post that is 350 characters long, with the same configuration, the first [B] will still remain unparsed.
The only thing I might be able to do is clean up unparsed BBCode tags, but would that not simply shift the issue onto "the post is not formatted correctly"?
Calling me rude when I'm considering buying SEVERAL of your products is bad for business as you may have just cost yourself several sales, at least several from me alone. It was merely a notification that because you are posting on vBulletin.org and not DragonByte-Tech.com, where our ability to quickly provide support is severely diminished, you should not complain about having to wait 24 hours for support.

I do believe we have it set up so guests can see the Top X Stats blocks.
I use those, plus our Forum Tabs with AJAX reloading that I've configured to only show my mod forums (for when I've been away or read threads have been bumped off the Top X Stats), plus our vBShout (which I don't believe guests can see) to ensure that I'm always up to date on threads that have already been posted and have simply been replied to.
I normally check those forums once every couple hours, more often than not several times every hour.
In addition to all of that, I receive instant email notifications whenever someone posts a thread, which has the thread title as well as the issue type.
As an example, I might receive an email saying "sticky has posted a new Bug: Installed vBShout, my forum is now down with errors
In forum: vBShout Lite Support"
I'll go "crap, this sounds serious. I better click it right away!" and the thread will usually be answered instantly - so long as I'm at the computer and working.
Not only that, but if someone posts a Feature Request, not only is it logged in our system until the end of time so it never gets lost in the pages, but I know I don't have to answer that OMGNOW like I would my previous example.
Compare that to vBulletin.org, which requires me to answer "less serious" posts before I even receive a notification that says you have replied to the vBShout vB4 thread saying your site is now down with errors.
Hopefully this gives you a better idea of why we prefer people posting on our own forums rather than vBulletin.org :)

Ok I'm just going to generally respond here.
The key seems to me to be the manage content types setting. Thank you, I see what you mean here.
I made the length pretty long so basically it's like getting a stream of all posts in full which is great.
Now, if you want support requests on your forum no problem. I posted at VB.org since this is where I found out about your product and you have provided support in this thread. Some coders say support is only on their forum but you guys haven't done that hence my posting here. If you prefer it there fine, I understand.
Now what I don't understand is why do images get resized in the sidebar but not on the full feed? I'll see what I can do about having an image resizer made that works with AJAX I guess as this is important.
Now I would like to buy this product but there are a couple hurdles. First, the full comment posting does not actually post to the thread as a new reply but as a separate comment on a reply. I would much prefer if I could just use the feed and respond to everyone in threads directly from the feed never having to leave it. You could post everywhere from a single page, brilliant.
Also, I was hoping the status updates would go in a status update thread. That way the forum would have sort of a big thread everyone can quickly post in. This would increase forum activity and post count tremendously.
Would you guys consider implementing these changes?

No, mods have no way of disabling other profile tabs, and this does in no way, shape or form replace the data displayed in the Visitor Messages tab.

Are there any examples of this mod in action?
What kind of load does it put on a server?

Our "all mods enabled" domain, www.dbtech.co has this mod in action.
The load depends on your settings and popularity of your site, it's impossible to answer that.

I understand that it is highly variable but, do you have any idea what kind of additional resources are needed for say 100 users using the feature?
If you had 100 users logged into the site and they were all using the feature would it create double the typle load? triple?

I really can't tell you any estimations, it would be 100% random and guesswork only with absolutely no basis in fact.

Lets assume there are 100 users and the are only using livewall, nothing else at all. Compare the load of 100 normal vb users (no wall) vs 100 users using only the wall.
Forget about 100... how about this very simple question. Will one user using livewall require more resources than one user simply browsing the website? The obvious answer is yes so, the question is, how much more resources? 1.5x a normal user? 2x a normal user?
If both of those questions still do not work... what can you tell me? ;)

It could be a conflict with another mod, can you try disabling all other modifications and see if that works :)

This is one of my favorite mods, and all of DBTech's mods are well-made and really easy to use, edit and install. Great job, I'll definitely be updating to pro in the near future for comment support. :D

Hey, is there anyway to edit the style of the statuses in the forum blocks so they're not indented and to be able to remove the quotes around the status text?

Hey, is there anyway to edit the style of the statuses in the forum blocks so they're not indented and to be able to remove the quotes around the status text?You need to edit the dbtech_livewall_block_entry template, there's " {vb:raw entry.preview} "

My suggestion for pro version. Extend post thanks to live feed (status and comment) and add also a module for social group.
