Forum database size

Hi all,

My forum database is 2.8GB on my 300GB dedicated server. The hosting company have set it up so that the root partition where the databases are stored /var/lib/mysql only have 15GB allocated.

The /home directory has well over 200GB available but this is a different partition and there's very little space required here in general as most content is added to mysql databases.

The partition that the database is located on is maxed out at 99% and I'm running out of files to delete to free up space. The hosting company are telling me to reduce the size of the database by erasing lots of older posts but this is half the attraction of my forum and seems insane when there is so much space elsewhere on the drive.

Any suggestions?

I know very little about mysql admin (so you probably would want to confirm this before trying it), but - I know the data directory is specified in the .ini file, so couldn't you move the data directory to a different partition and reconfigure it to point there? I think you could also just mount a different directory at /var/lib/mysql/data.

Your hosting company should not tell you what it's better for you, it's you who should tell them what you need. You pay for it and they should do to please you. I'm sure my hosting provider would never ever say to me something like they said to you about deleting old post/files.

Suggestions? Yes, tell them to make a backup of your sites content and to set up your server your way (to change the partitions sizes to your needs), and then restore everything. If they will not be nice talk to their manager, if it wont work, change the hosting company.
Really, deleting old post/content is not a best way here.
