change the layout of default widget

Hi

I used category nav widget (this section only) and wish some one can help me to make another widget with the same concept but with 2 small changes, the first make it grape categories from this section plus all categories in subsections, and the second thing is the display method, I want to make it in vertical way (rows and columns) not just a list in one column, so who can help in this? :)
