Two columns of categories

If you installed the mod, please "Mark as Installed".

Description:
This mod splits the categories list into two columns.

Compatibility:
vBulletin 4.0.0 and newer.

Installations:
You don't have to change anything in the templates/files, just upload the plugin and that's all.
AdminCP > Plugins & Products > Manage Products > [Add/Import Product]

Settings:
Settings -> Options -> Two columns of categories

- Enable/Disable the hack
- Set the margin between categories
- Disable the hack in specific styles

I run 1920 x 1080 however I shrink my browser windows down to 1024 x 768 and swap back and forth when doing styles so this should be pretty close:

That's on a fresh 4.1.8 default style and as you can see if you have long thread titles or forum descriptions it might run over into other areas... I feel that this can be easily adjusted using CSS and would depend on if your using a Fluid or Fixed width style and if fixed width it would depend on the width... less would mean more adjustments so it's all aesthetically correct and a larger resolution may show no errors as you initially see in the screenshots the author posted.

The problem here is that your categories are not actually categories..
They not "act" like a category, they act like a forum.

Well, I can suggest 2 solutions:
identify the user's resolution, if it 1024 then

I'm also having the same issue with everything bleeding over. I think all my widths sets are all fixed not fluid. Though where in the css does this edit exactly? I think i can do some editing on my own to fix it to match my forums needs

Hmm try disabling the subforum management mod you have installed perhaps the one by Valter? Refresh and if it now shows correctly you know it's a conflict between the two otherwise it's something else either way you can disable/enable the one you prefer until a solution is found.

As I see you have fixed width.. there is no enough space to contain the all information (last post, stats).
You can shrunk the status icon if you like.. go to stylevars and find: forumicon_size
or you can manually delete the last post or the stats.

In the next version I will add more options to deal with situations like this.

Your forums are sub-forums from some reason..
Which it weired because sub-forums to category should be just forums.
I'm not sure what you should do to change that..

You can reorder the categories so categories with same number of forums will be side by side.

It's complicated because the categories are arranged in LI lists..
so it a problem to split some of the categories.
I'm still trying find a solution for this..

This will then make the 2 columns on the main page.

Yes which means this is how it looks from a top level down perspective:

- Main Category (One single category of forums)
-- Forum within ^ the Main Category
--- Sub-forum ^ inside of the forum above only.
--- Another Sub-forum ^ inside of the forum above only.

- Second Category (This would be separate, normally below the one above depending on how you have them "ordered" in the admincp. In the case of this modification if you have it setup properly i.e. this was in fact a category it will now try to place this directly beside the other category listed above but each will have it's own "wrapper" per say.)
-- Forum within ^ the Second Category
--- Sub-forum ^ inside of the forum above only.
--- Another Sub-forum ^ inside of the forum above only.

Yes I see what you mean.
this bug caused not by the mod, but from the way vb have built the category templates.
This mod just split them to two categories, it does not make changes in the templates..

anyway, I already work on a fix for that..
But it can take some time because I am quite busy these days.

In the next version I'll change the way I split the categories..
currently I use in a css trick to do that, As I see it doesn't work in some cases..
I've tried fix it but it still not work in some cases..
I have to think of a new way to do that.

My best suggestion to avoid the problem for now is set change the order of the categories and set side by side categories which have the same or close number of forums. That will reduce the blank spaces.

I just want let you know that in few days I will release a new version (1.5), change log:
optimization of the code
no more one column with 50% width - fixed completely
the hack works now with categories which act as forum
rss / subscribe icons no more overflow the text
due to the css changes, the new version doesn't support IE 7 and lower (the mod will automatically disabled in those versions) - will be fixed in next versionMaybe will be include in this version
option to disable the mod automatically in low resolutionsUnfortunately, the gap "bug" still not fixed.
As I suggest before, for now re-order the categories and set side by side categories which have similar amount of forums to avoid the gap.
I hope find a better solution.

It will not be included in this version. I already start working on it, hope to finish soon and release it in the next version which will be 2.0 .

Hmm maybe some should consider creating a blank forum per say or a Sponsor forum and simply use image code to show their ad or ad code from your software of choice? It can be a work around for a few that use ads I know and anyone else all you need to do is think... "What can I display there to rid our site of the gap yet will be helpful or beneficial at the same time?" it could be current products for example if you have a store, show a popular product such as a shirt, coffee mug or other heck whatever you can think of your all creative in different ways :cool:.

If users don't like the ads remind them they pay the bills in a nice way OR that there's plenty of software albeit add-ons for Firefox or other that can rid them of ads on all sites heck there's even a GreaseMonkey script that lets you hide all vBulletin signatures on any and every forum if you wish.

Just thought it might spark some ideas so brainstorm everyone!

I wouldn't stress the IE7 issue, unless you really want to have a go at it.

I wouldn't stress the IE7 issue, unless you really want to have a go at it.

vBulletin will be ending support for IE6 and IE7 (thank god, finally)
I agree about IE6, but IE7 still have a huge amount of users that still use it.

I just want let you know that in few days I will release a new version (1.5), change log:

no more one column with 50% width - fixed completely
the hack works now with categories which act as forum
rss / subscribe icons no more overflow the text
due to the css changes, the new version doesn't support IE 7 and lower (the mod will automatically disabled in those versions) - will be fixed in next versionMaybe will be include in this version
option to disable the mod automatically in low resolutionsUnfortunately, the gap "bug" still not fixed.
As I suggest before, for now re-order the categories and set side by side categories which have similar amount of forums to avoid the gap.

Currently this mod split only to 2 column.. there is no option to choose 3 column.
about the other question, as I said before, I've fixed that bug. I will release an update soon.
It's a bit delayed because I change the way I used to split the categories, I rebuild the mod to fix the gap issue.
I have to fix a minor bug with the order of the categories and that is all.
Should not take much time.

VB 4.1.2
I was running version 1.4 and got the notice there was an upgrade. I took out the old and installed the new. It's the cat's meow now. Some of my themes don't look so good with the split columns so being able to turn it off on those makes this version far better.
I did notice one thing though. Some of the themes would take changing the spacing right away while others would ignore a change. I found by going in to the maintenance functions and running update styles fixed that.

Tried it on 4.2 and it worked...well sort of. Looks ok until you expand the sidebar. Then the display gets a bit weird.

I think the mod has a lot of potential and I'll try it again after the next update but for now I uninstalled it.

You can disable the mod in specific styles.
So create new style, and disable this mod in it. Then you will have 2 styles, one with columns and one without.
Then just add the links to replace styles. Not should be such a problem.

You don't have to redo all the changes you have done in the templates. You can just create sub-style under the main style.

its still too much effort. It doesnt give the other users the variety of changing through without needing to change style. its easier for them to have that option to have quick change through the different layout. Not everyone likes it :p

And yet, I have a list of minor fixes and new options to add, but I don't have the time to work on it.

First of all: Works with latest Version and looks great @ 1600x900. I can resize the screen but when reaching something around 600px, some parts overlap. Thats a problem at some mobiles I think (if mobile style not in use).

What I don?t like is that I have no chance to decide, what categories are on the right or left side. I can not change the order to decide this and there is no option for that.

I read that you will add this option and I love to be informed of it.

For an future update, it would be a nice addition not to have categories on left/right but to have forums in categories on left/right under each categorie. So something like an inner two column model.

I have 3 main categories. the first 2 categories have 5 and 7 sub-forums, these sub-forums have sub-forums of their own. then the 3rd category has 5 sub-forums.

Hello, I love this idea, but is there a way to only have the forums and not categories side by side? For instance

I only have 2 or 3 categories, and one has about 18 forums, with the others only have 2 or 4... makes everything look really uneaven.
