View Full Version : Screwed up Avatars!

Some time ago (before I even upgraded to 4.1.7) I wanted to prevent people from uploading pictures directly from their computer to a thread. (I'd rather have them host the picture on Photobucket or somewhere else)

So I changed some settings to prevent uploads and now the software will no longer allow anyone to upload avatars. Everyone that already had an avatar is fine-their's still shows.

To try to fix this, I have set all the permissions I can find to Yes...

In the Avatar Managar, I have permissions set to Yes.

In the Usergroup Managar, under Registered Users, then "Picture Uploading Permissions" there is an option "Can Upload Custom Avatars". I have this set to Yes.

I must have messed with some other setting because everything seems to be enabled to allow custom avatars. When I try to upload one, I get the error "Unable to Move/Copy File"

Any suggestions??

PS...I know there is some note about the folder should be chmod 777. I know as much about chmod777 as I do about walking on the moon. Is there a way to check this? Or is this a server function?

Usually whatever program you use to upload files to your server will have a way to see/change permissions on directories. (If you tell us what you use, I'm sure someone here will be able to tell you exactly how to do it).

I use Fire FTP in Firefox to upload files. Also if it helps, I now have the avatars hosted in a Filesystem instead of a Database.

Thanks!

in fire FTP select the directory then right click and select properties and put 0777 in the manual box

Thank you. I'm assuming I only do this to teh "customavatars" directory under "forums" right?

For example, I don't want to set the entire forums directory to 0777, right? Or do I?

Right...don't do it to the entire forums directory.

I set two directories to 0777. The first was forums/customavatars" and the second was forums/images/avatars

I'm still getting the same error message :(

In the options, under "Server Settings and Optimization Options", try changing the setting of "Safe Mode Upload Enabled" (looks like you probably have it set to "yes" now). This is just something to try - I'm not sure it will make any difference.

Holy crap it worked!! I did have it set to Yes. I switched it to No and I was able to upload an avatar.

Now the question is, What is Safe Mode and is the forum more secure with it selected to Yes? I do know that the server guy said the server runs in Safe Mode.

And thank you so much for your help!
