AJAX Threads: What is it?
AJAX Threads brings your threads alive, making them automatically refresh without needing to reload the page.

Uses

AJAX Threads is the ideal product for forums with busy threads or which deal with any sort of "event" be that TV shows, sports or game releases!
AJAX Threads allows you to make topics "auto update" without the user having to refresh. This can give performance benefits when applied to threads which receive a lot of refresh requests, and can increase user participation.
Topics can be turned live by admins individually, or you can set whole forums to have their threads be live automatically. You can even allow only VIP usergroups to have threads refresh automatically to increase subscription numbers.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please remember to click the, https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/external/2015/08/2.png button to the right if you installed the mod ---->

What does 'Marking As Installed' do ?

* It helps you to stay on top of updates - members who have installed modifications will be notified by us whenever new updates are available.

* For security issues - vbulletin.org will contact all members who have installed a modification whenever a security issue is brought to their attention.

* Marking a modification as installed also helps us know how many people are using our work, giving us extra incentive to provide more features and new modifications.

We appreciate the support!

Translations available @ our forum (http://%22http://www.dragonbyte-tech.com/forums/91-Translations)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Major Features:

Automatically Refresh Threads: Users will now see new posts in "real time" without having to refresh the page

Performance Benefits: If your forum receives lots of refresh requests on threads being posted in often this can put a lot of strain on your server - AJAX Threads will greatly reduce server resources used in those situations by refreshing only the minimum information required.

Total Control: You can set threads individually or per forum. You can set particular usergroups to receive the benefit, and you can even have it apply automatically to popular threads!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Complete Feature List (Lite)
* vBOption: Enable Automatic Updates
* vBOption: Refresh Interval
* vBOption: Idle Timeout
* vBOption: Automatic Un-Idle
* vBOption: Enable Information Bar (Tells users how often the thread refreshes, whether they're idle, and how to un-idle, etc)
* vBOption: Maximum Shown Posts
* Ability for users to manually refresh threads if Automatic Updates are disabled (cannot refresh more often than Refresh Interval regardless)
* Ability for users to manually un-idle themselves if automatic updates are enabled and the Idle Timeout is reached
* Per-usergroup setting to determine if automatic updates are enabled
* Per-usergroup setting to determine if manual updates are enabled
* Per-category setting to determine if automatic updates are enabled
* Per-category setting to determine if manual updates are enabled
* "Live" image on forumdisplay for threads that have automatic or manual updates enabled
* Posts fetched by AJAX Threads are marked as read
* Per-usergroup "duration" before a thread goes "idle".

Complete Feature List (Pro)
* vBOption: Minimum Replies
* Per-forum setting to determine if automatic updates are enabled
* Per-forum setting to determine if manual updates are enabled
* Per-thread setting to determine if automatic updates are enabled
* Per-thread ability for administrators with the "Manager" permission to override forum / usergroup settings and either enable or disable automatic updates

How do I remove the upper update bar?

and, is it possible to io include this for the quick reply box? so that if the user himself writes a post it too just get "faded into" the board?

What type of server are you on, what are the specs?

Did you try and disable other mods to see if it conflicting with another mod?

Double posts on quick reply is something I believe I've taken care of in my internal build (hotfixed for Pro), I'll update Lite with it if I can confirm it's not happening again :)

v1.0.2
Fix: The mod would refuse to function on vBulletin 4.x if you were not using the "Suite" (i.e. lacked vBulletin CMS installed).
Fix: Hopefully fixed Quick Reply post duplication issues

A special note on the Quick Reply issue: It exist(ed?) because I wanted to make replies you made via Quick Reply show up if you had multiple tabs of the same thread open. If v1.0.2 does not fix it, I have devised an alternative method that should fix it.

hey.

ok i will do that. but first a question:
because my site is not public yet i can only try this feature using the same ip but different browsers and different nicknames.
but actually it should work nevertheless or not?
the only thing that doesn't work on my site is the refresh itself.
i can see all other aspects concerning the mod, but the refresh seems not to be working, neither the automatic one, nor the manual one :/

hmm deactivating all other mods didn't change anything.
but in the readme there is an aspect i haven't done yet:
"If you haven't done so already, add yourself to the Super Administrators

i'm not sure...what do i have to do exactly? i have absolutely no php-knowledge and don't want to crash my files :(

Ok that explains it. The category it what is shown. So if you select to leave`enabled, or disable it, this will effect all forums and sub-forums with in that category, right?

I currently have this mod disabled on my site. Waiting on the webmaster to check the mod out to see if something obvious stands out on why it is not functioning.

Mh i go crazy.
Now i deinstalled version 1.0.2 completely and deleted the files from my server and did a new try with 1.0.3.
There seems to be the same issue:
I've reuploaded the files on my server, and i've installed the products .xml.
I can see everything concerning the mod but the ajax controlled refresh still doesn't work. Neither the manual one nor the automatic one. although i'm quite sure i've configured the mods settings properly. I've also contacted my webspace hoster and he told me the server is absolutely compatible with any ajax based features.
Does anyone have an idea what happens wrong on my site? :(

maybe i can contact you and you can have a look in my admincp^^

Fillip,

for some reason I have been unable to get this mod to work with the threads on my board. I have tested on all styles including default. Info shows up above and below in the thread as it should, but even selecting the "Reload" does nothing. I noticed that when hovering the cursor over the "Reload" text it shows "javascript://" in address bar. There is no other part of address attached to the javasript:// text. Not sure if that shows any issue or not but I thought I would point it out. If you want to see this for yourself I will leave the mod enabled for awhile, otherwise I will eventually disable the mod per the Product Manager. I have an account setup for you to login with.

Thanks!

Ok however you really should include info like that in the Read Me notes. I was unistalling and reinstalling, and then finally gave up and search for this thread as a last resort.

So I went in admincp/settings/Message Posting and Editing Options/Quick Reply/ and selected "Yes, Click Required". After doing that I Test posted and sure enough the Ajax Mod now works on my current 4.1.6. version board. Thank you for the heads up. Now waiting for mod update. Thanks again!

I just experienced this mod not allowing me to access the admincp. When selecting to enter admincp it would just sit there until it would time out. It would also not allow me to log out from my account either. When trying to log out by clicking submit it would sit and kick you back in like 5 sec to same screen not allowing it to go completely through the process. good job fillip.!:up:
at least in firefox. but it seems not to work using internet explorer. in opera it works too.

But i see one issue in this feature: As Moderator you may sometimes not realize that a new posting has been released.
maybe there should be added a feature that a mod can see all postings that have been written while the mod was in a special thread?!

Please ensure you've cleared your browser cache, as DBTech has been running this build for a few days now and we have not encountered any duplication issues :)

Fillip

Cleared cache, tried on IE and Chrome, still happens if a quick reply is made right after an AJAX post.

Still getting double posts.

Say I load a thread up, someone replies, it shows up as one post, once I do a reply in quick reply, my post is last but the earlier post (which was posted as I was looking at the threas) is duplicated, excellent mod though, thanks

Ensure you've cleared any cache (browser, server systems like vB Optimise) because this does not happen on the latest version, and there's plenty of posts a day I've tested this with on DBTech.

Ok cheers i'll try, I am running memcached on the server, but its a managed VPS, might have to ask site5 to clear the cache, I guess it will eventually renew with the updated plugin.

You appear to have set AJAX Threads to refresh every second. Please adjust that to a higher number as that may be the cause of this problem. As pointed out in the setting, setting it too low will cause problems (slowdown) with the server as well.

The same goes for your "top 10 threads" mod that also updates every second.

In addition, I tested it on your forum (Belazor and Belazor2 respectively) and I was unable to replicate your issue.

The options are in vBulletin Options, and you should see the bars on your showthread (when on the last page of a thread that's not closed) assuming you have not turned off the bar in the options.

The mod then silently works in the background :)

DragonByte Tech

2%.

;) no but seriously, it is impossible to answer such a question. Even if it doesn't make any impact on one CPU, it may very well make an impact on a much lower-grade CPU. Et cetera.

Fillip,
sorry for bothering, but does the server load depend on the number of replies in the thread? I have multiple very long threads on my forum (10.000 posts long threads) - would that have an impact on my load?

This still has the problem of double posts showing up from time to time. A refresh fixes it but I wonder why the double posting is such a big issue with this and it can't seem to be eliminated.

Alan_SP

Problem is it couldn't be reliably reproduced. If you found out the way that always reproduces such behavior, it would be fixed. :)

For example only once I have seen double posts. After that never again. It seems that it may be related to something specific to your server, or mods you use, whatever.

Best bet is to check the links in the description for info on the pro version - we're not allowed to promote it here. I can say that the footer links are removed by a separate branding free license and not just by the pro license though.

If you are using the i.s.s.w "security" product, please disable it.

If not, try disabling all other plugins that run on admin_global except for DBTech mods, until you get AJAX Threads working. You'll then have found the culprit :)

well seems that something is going wrong with .php file or I made a mistake::

I get the following error when I am trying to install xml file...

/xx/xx/xx/xx/dbtech/ajaxthreads/includes/class_install.php appears to be missing!

file is there, I can even edited with vi, and see the contents. I have check any permission type to be sure that is not as, "read only". I set the correct permissions to be able vbulletin take action, restarting nginx server twice and reloaded at the same time, and at the end, I disable any kind of mod in vbulletin but still the problem isn't fix. I just want to know (since am not expert with php language ) why class_install.php doesn't have "end brackets" ?? for example <?php ....code here ..... ?> <<---- is not appear on .php file I don't have other thoughts about what may occur that kind of error, so I just thought a good idea is to ask first before to edit a code that isn't mine..... :)

Thank you

Can you post or PM the URL to your site so I can see if it's uploaded to the correct dir?

The ?> is not needed for PHP scripts to function, in fact there's rumours it's becoming deprecated :)

Thanks for helping me... :) You gave me an idea with that, and I check the folder by typing the url into the address bar of my browser, and yes nginx wasn't able to get access into the folder "includes" I had miss to two - three folder that permissions are wrong, so vbulletin wasn't able to see the file of the folder.. Now I fix the first problem but when I am trying to save updates on AJAX thread field,(admincp) I got the following email from localhost,

Invalid SQL:
UPDATE forum SET

### UPDATE QUERY GENERATED BY fetch_query_sql() ###
`dbtech_ajaxthreads_cannotautoupdate` = '0'
WHERE forumid = 1;

MySQL Error : Unknown column 'dbtech_ajaxthreads_cannotautoupdate' in 'field list'
Error Number : 1054

Is required to set columns or table in mysql databases ?? Also, keep in mind that I closed port 3306 for world, so only localhost can be able to handle/access on database so a good idea to know the file of the mod, (as now I am thinking, it's 4:30am here ;) ) that's call mysql database to add column rows (or more general a new table) with that way I can configure , user & pass of database, and the port number proper, so database be able to respond back. Now may I am wrong or something, I really don't know how vbulletin mod's works, basically I am trying to understand. So if you have any ideas please let me know, if you need further informations, feel free to ask me:) ..... Oh at the end, please don't give the proper attention to my words, may confuse you :) Always thinking the most impossible situations, and always problems are more easier :P

Thanks for your support!!

ALTER TABLE thread ADD dbtech_ajaxthreads_refreshthread ENUM('0','1') DEFAULT '1'

ok, cool. i just solved it by turning off your LIVE plugin and then creating a thread prefix that is bright red and says LIVE. so ill put that prefix on events. works good.

ill try to dig around and figure out how to only get the text to show up at the bottom. i mean, you dont really need to click to refresh when you are on the first post since you still have to scroll down anyways.

im using it to iframe a thread into a 900x200 window below an iframe of live video streams. so basically making a forum thread into a chatbox since it auto updates without having to leave the page. i put an anchor so that when the thread iframe loads it goes straight to the first posts instead of the top, eliminating all the nav bars etc.

that way i have my vbookie/play by play thread on the same page as the video sports stream. i combined it with simple postbit mod to remove all the post bit and avatars only on those threads.

Sure enough the files aren't there. Are those files supposed to be placed in that folder by the install script? I put all the other files in the folders where they belong and have checked several times to make sure they're all there.

I can see that it's installed because I see the message at the tops of forums, but there's no way for me to change any of the settings.

That's because I have no way of knowing what you customised your AdminCP folder to be :p

By default, the folder is called admincp. You chose to rename it, I cannot account for that. It's your responsibility to check that all mods that upload files to the admincp and modcp folders go in your renamed folders instead.

The screen refreshing can happen if there's an error with your AJAX request and it can't load the new post without page reloads.

Fillip

this still happens. I got rid of the manual fix from a while back, so basically I get the prompt to Refresh or Stay on the Page quite often, it seems like it happens if someone maybe posts at the same time as me but that has never been consistent. All I know is that it happens often when there's more traffic than usual, maybe 3-8 people discussing a topic in real time, like a sports game in progress.

It just seems to defeat the purpose of "live" automatic refreshing when about 1/3 of the time the screen has to refresh completely itself.

DragonByte Tech
10-22-2012, 01:20 PM
Unless it can be reliably reproduced, I have no way of debugging it :(

You may want to consider enabling error logging to file in your PHP setup, so you can see if there's any PHP errors that are intermittent.

Is there any way to have Metafilter-style new post alert behavior?

IE: If there are no new posts, nothing shows up. When they're are there, a little box pops up with how many new posts there are, and asks if you want to see more. It also tells you to reload the page when it goes too long with no updates. It works a little bit like how new tweets are loaded on Twitter.

My users really love the plugin and I've gone ahead and bought the pro version, but they really don't like how the automatic updates work now.

I found an oddity with this mod last night.

We had a Q&A session with a local political candidate, so we created a forum where all the new posts were moderated. We made the candidate a moderator so he could see all the questions that were asked of him and he could choose which ones he wanted to reply to. As he replied to a question, we would then approve his reply since it was moderated, too, and then we would approve the original question. The candidate did not reply to the questions in the order that they posted.

That's when things got weird. After he replied to a couple of posts, some of the posts that were made before that one just disappeared. I had to finally turn off the automatic refresh to keep that from happening, but even using the manual refresh caused it to happen. I finally had to fall back to just using the browser refresh button to see which posts needed to be moderated and to see any new posts being added to the thread.

That is intended functionality. This mod has a "Maximum Post Count" that compliments vBulletin's "Posts per Page" setting to control how many posts show up per page.

Update

Hotfix: PHP 5.4 Compatibility fixes

This does not guarantee the mod is error free on PHP 5.4, but it will take care of the reported errors. Thank you all for your reports :)

Thanks for this update, is there a new archive link for it? Also in my testing there are compatibility issues with vbulletin 4.2.2 which are unrelated to php 5.4. Are these fixed also?
