I just paid for VB and I guess I'm waiting to be able to download the software.

But what version do I download? Am I capable of downloading earlier versions? Or only the latest version?

Yes, you may download earlier versions of the software. As for which version you should use, I can't really answer that as I think they each have their advantages. It really depends on what you want.

I think your main decision is going to be between 3.8.7 and 4.1.x. The vB 4 line has had its ups and downs, problems, etc - but it is coming together nicely I think. I would suggest installing both versions on your PC (or Mac?) using XAMPP (if Windows) or MAMP(if Mac). Test both, and see which one you like best.

As much as I am a fan of the 3.8 series if you are doing a new install and you have no existing reason to use 3.8, I can't see any reason you wouldn't install the latest 4.x version at this point.

I've been using vBulletin for ten years, but I have no special sql/php/css skills except for the minimum I've managed to learn to get vBulletin to do what I want. vb 3.8.7 is stable and has a large base of mods here, but I don't think you're going to get much in the way of new features. 4.1.5 (which I now use) has quirks, but it seems like the build is going in the right direction (some users disagree with me there). It takes a lot more time and skill and research to get 4.x working and looking right if you have a need to individualize. That said, I can do a lot more with 4.x.

You can upgrade from 3.8.7, but it's not easy to impossible to downgrade to 3.x from 4.x. Take a look at some forums running 3.8.7, check out the mods for the version and determine what's best for you.

I know this is old, but would any of you at this point, agree on the most stable (best) version as of today's date.? (i hear lots of issues with 4.1.12, & 4.2) So im wanting to upgrade, but only to the most recent, & best option.

Per my research it seems 4.1.7 or 4.1.10 are the last/best two versions with the least amount of mod issues.

Any thoughts or opinions.?

Absolutely not. Each version of VB4 has been better then the previous since the introduction of the new editor. If upgrading go right to 4.2.0. At the worst case 4.1.12 if you have an essential mod that doesn't work on the 4.2.0 navbar.

Thanks for the reply..
I think I've decided to wait till everything is 4.2 ready, then do it all at once. (including the skin)
At which point hopefully 4.2 will still be up to date. lol (i dont want to bother with 4.1.x because of the activity stream, navbar, etc.)

Thanks again
