is there a way to upgrade vb without losing all my editted templates?

I am trying to upgrade my VB to the latest version, but I'm very afraid that I it will overwrite all my modified templates

It won't overwrite your templates or custom changes. It will only replace changes you may have made in the .php files. Because of this i make a log in a txt file containing all the changes I've made to any of the .php files so when they are overwritten via update, i can easily go back and make the changes.
