I have about 6 templates as "child templates" under the default vB 4.0 template. This is so I can make template changes to the default one, and have them automatically affect the others. That said, though, I'm not fond of having the default template selectable as a usable template, but if I try to turn it off, it turns off all my other templates, too. On top of that, when a user logs out and logs back it, it automatically sets them at the default vB 4.0 template and they have to use the drop-down box and re-select their desired template. It's not a huge deal but just a general annoyance.

Basically is there any way to correct this and/or disable the parent template but still be able to use it as a way to affect all other child templates under if it template changes are made to it? Thanks.

when you disable the parent style, you should then be able to re-enable the childs.

Even when I do that, and make it so it's not selectable, I can still see it on the dropdown menu and can select it. Is that because I'm an admin or what? I have "User Selectable" set to "disable," so users shouldn't be able to select it.

Yes. Admins see all styles, users only see the ticked ones.
