This is an enhanced version of the popular NoSpam! mod by antialiasis for vBulletin 3.7

This mod was marked "Re-usable Code" so I have added a new feature that turns this into an Image Verification mod.

I thank antialiasis for the groundwork and his original mod and thank him again for allowing the code to be re-used by the community.

This new version of NoSpam! called NoSpam! Image Enhancement turns the very popular NoSpam! mod into a custom image verification system. The VB4 version only works on Registration, Threads/Posts, and/or Contact Us pages.

Besides just setting a question and answer(s) you now also set an image which is displayed along with the question. You should make your question based on the image.

For example: If you have an image with two cats, you can ask the question, "How many cats are in this picture?" and you can set the acceptable answers to: 2 and two. (Answers are NOT case sensitive.)

If you used the original NoSpam! mod you will quickly understand how to format the question, image, and answers. If you never used the NoSpam! mod I have included specific instructions and examples.

Two example images are included with the zip and will be need to be uploaded to your /images/nospam directory (which you will create.)

When you import the product it will automatically be setup to work with the two example images.

These are EXAMPLES- you should add your own images and questions as soon as possible.

BE CREATIVE with your images and questions. The more creative you are the harder it will be for spammers to crack this.

Sometimes you might be able to ask several different questions based on the same picture.

Useful Tip: DO NOT include the answer to the question in the file name of the image. This will be the easiest way for bots to try and answer your questions.

Disability Compliance: Please understand this mod will make it impossible for blind users to register on your forum. The "alt" text of each image will tell people if they can't see the image please contact the administrator. Please be considerate and offer alternate means of registration on your forum somehow/somewhere besides your normal registration.

This has been tested on VB 4.0.8 and 4.2.0 and should work on all VB 4..x.x versions.

I'm tempted to try it if it's an easy install, but I fear it won't help. The spammers we're getting these days are obviously actual humans, not bots. They would have as little trouble with these pictures as they do with our Q&As.

What's your forum about?This is way off topic for this mod, but in the interest of education: The one of which I was speaking is international web hosting, which prevents me from blocking any parts of the world. Another site - a small local community - sees no such problem, presumably because I've got most of the planet blocked off.

We're seeing at least one human a week, maybe two. I just can't imagine they can make any real money at this, especially if they have to make x posts before they can even post their first link. Of course, as soon as the links go up we've caught them.

Ah that is a tough one... even if you made a question "on topic" they would likely know the answers.

However I wold still try this. I was certain I was getting hit with human spammers- but since implementing this my number of obvious spam registrations has dropped significantly.

Remember sometimes human spammers still run scripts and scripts are made around Q&A and ReCaptcha answers... When something new/different comes out like this their scripts just can't deal with it- and unless it becomes popular they may never update their scripts to work with a system like this.

Protection is from the relative obscurity of this mod/system.

If it's a real human going forum by forum one at a time nothing will ever really stop that of course- but a lot of "human" spammers use tools to speed that up- this WILL help against them.

If you go to Admin CP -> Plugins & Products -> Product Manager is there any notice at the top of the screen saying plugins are disabled?

If you go to Admin CP -> Settings -> Options -> Plugin/Hook System is it set to YES?

I looked at both of those and there was a warning at the top of the Plugin Product Manager saying they were turned off in the config.php

I have 20 question and answer in default one and another 20 in this

Given that they both are random = 400 possibilities. :))

Questions are simple but there is no chance any bot will ever crack it unlike captchas or re-capchas

I have recently used the mod "keycaptcha" which is outstanding for stopping bots, but its somehow connected to their server, and it seems to get DDOS I'm guessing from time to time and allow bots

Sorry. I mean't that I'm using both No Spam and Advanced Registration Lite by DragonByte. It works fine in Contact Us but not in Registration the images and fields do not show up. I need Advance Registration because I have some custom fields that need to be filled out durring registration. Any ideas on how to make the work together?

To clarify, we hook into existing hooks in the register.php and simply output our own template to allow for complete field management. Compatibility is possible, all that would be needed is to integrate your field into the field management page. Unfortunately, an easy integration feature doesn't exist in our product as of yet, but I will be happy to look into your mod to see if it could be integrated (with your permission of course).

Also, disabling "Use Custom Page" will revert back to using the default vB template which will, naturally, allow for your field to populate itself into the page.

Jon, this mod was from and remains "Re-usable code" so you are free to do whatever you want with it- no additional permission is needed.

I based my previous statement on looking at a copy of registration.php and saw no hooks in it- but I didn't actually install the mod so thank you for the clarification.

The concept of asking a question based off an image specified in settings is not complicated or ground breaking code, you would be more than welcomed to add such a feature to your mod using this code or simply writing your own- no trade secrets here. ;)

I can't see how it would show the filename and not the image other than the browser doesn't load the image for whatever reason and the browser shows the filename in place of the "missing" image. I've been using this for a long time and never seen it happen on my forum- please provide a screenshot if you can when you see it happen again.

I've seen this issue happen if you're trying to use the same pic name for several different questions. If you are then rename pic according to your question.

In my forums users can't connect using Facebook. When they try, the "Wrong answer" message appears directly. There's no option to write the AntiSPAM answer.
Any help with that?

Are you on the most current VB version (VB 4.2.1) and do you have all the latest versions of any 3rd party plugins, like VBSEO?

I have seen exploits in sites running old versions where spammers bypass registration completely.

Wouldn't hurt to update your questions if you haven't in a while.

When using steam connect. It says to do the image verification but theres no 'image verification' thing but when I go to make my account its like you didn't do it. Even though theres no place TO do it.

Is there away to take that out of steam connect or to add it in there?

I'm not familiar with that plugin but if you want to try-

Go to Admin CP -> Plugins & Products -> Plugin Manager

Edit the Plugin titled:

Check if NoSpam! (img) question has been answered correctly (Register)

In the PHP code- put this code at the VERY TOP


if (THIS_SCRIPT == 'register')

and put this code at the very bottom:


}


That will basically tell the plugin to only run on the built in register.php page.

Hopefully steam connect uses its own php page so this may work.

Just wanted to mention I turned this mod off yesterday on my VB 3.8 forum figuring it probably wasn't doing anything anymore... Sure enough within 10 minutes I had 8 spam registrations. I immediately turned it back on. Wow.

Yes I still think this is the best mod for stop spamming. You need good questions, and a recaptcha, simple as that then no spam.
