View Full Version : Who wants a new Media Library?

Good morning all,
I am presenting using 8WayRun.Com - Media Library. As you are all aware this is a great mod and a great asset to any website unfortunately the developer has left the mod and the VB community as well.
So I took it upon myself to find a developer (Lancerforhire) who would be interested in making a new version of this mod.
Lancerforhiore has done private work for me and I can attest to his professionalism and the way he supports his mods.
Of course this WILL NOT be free, it requires me to find 15 people who are willing to invest 50 dollars each.
Benefits:
New version of the mod, with new functionality and supported!
We will release the mod after its developed to the general community.
If you are interested, reply here, I will send you a PM and let you know where you can Paypal your contribution. You will only send your money once we have all the 15 people we need.
Any takers?

I'm all for paying for a similar mod to the 8WayRun.Com - Media Library mod and I already sent a PM to Lancerforhire. What I'm not willing to do is pay for something sight unseen, which I think is being requested here. Am I wrong (I hope that I am)?

All I am looking for is commitment from 15 people, of course Lancerforhire will want some kind of payment prior to starting the project, and I am sure you agree that this is the norm.

The development progress will be visible on a second forum so it will be pretty "hands on" :). I typically use a certain escrow service for projects like this but the requests are usually from one person or company, not 15.
At any rate, we are assembling in a private forum to map out the mod before anything happens; we just need to gather the 15 contributors first. This is going to be an interactive development process, not just click "Send Payment" and wait. :p

I agree with you but I also know that some payment should be made before hand, it's simply a better logistics approach to the project.

Please right me down as I have also contacted Lancerforhire via pm. I agree that is the norm. I am willing to give 50% before hand and the other 50% upon completion.
One question I have is to what extent will this new modification be like 8way media library? Will we be able to transfer all the videos we have now in Media Library? Along with all the playlists and such?
One suggestion I have is to gather ideas to add to this script. Media Library is a good script but it is incomplete in some areas. Will there be a chance to add new features or simply rewrite media Library?
We (our other co-founder and I) have been gathering for some time a "layout" if you will of what a video script should be. We have been studying different script from different sites and gathered all the best features from all of them. Will we be able to participate these studies to perhaps include them in the new script? I feel we all have a better chance of producing something extraordinary if we all pitch in and contribute.

Sounds good to me, specially the interactive bit, can't wait to see what we all come up with. :)
P.S.: We should have a list on the first post of the people who are interested so we can all keep count. Just saying so we can all help move this along and be on the same page.

Sorry I was unclear about this previously; I quoted this like a regular project; the 15 contributions of $50 are for creating a brand new, stable media library mod with the same features. The new mod will clearly have optimizations, performance improvements, and of course and a script to transfer over the media data from the old mod.
Any features past that will require more time/labor on my part than the initial quote and will have to be paid for separately; I want to make sure everyone is clear on that. I am still supporting the modification for free in regards to bug fixes and vB updates, which is the reason we are doing this in the first place. When I say the committee is mapping out the mod (in the context of no more than the initial contributions of $50), I mean mapping within the existing feature set like minor improvements, "move X over there", "change this to X", etc.

Also, consider using youtube api to let members upload to YouTube directly from the forum. http://code.google.com/apis/youtube/overview.html

I will gladly buy this product, but unfortunatelly i can't pay for "dreams". After i will see something beeing accomplished, i will contribute for sure. Untill then, sorry... but i only see enthusiasm. Don't get me wrong, but i have learned to not trust anyone on the internet (after loosing money so many times)... specially members who just registered this year (HellRZR). As for Lancerforhire, i can only see two mods on vBulletin.org... which is not enough for me. If you'll take a look inside 8WayRun.Com - Media Library you will notice a ton of templates and coding required... nothing to be getting easy, specially if they say "will start from scratch".
If this would be one of the "easy mods", there would be at least 5 other media library mods over vBulletin.org. And what if we pay for this project and becomes just like 8WayRun did... a lost project? What if there will be more money required? Or what if it will take an year for Lancerforhire to finish this project?
Sorry, too many unknown variables for me. If i could see a project with a timeline, with exactly what's to be done and what not... exactly how much money the coder estimates for programming... then it would be another matter.
P.S. Why not trying to get in touch with the 8WayRun.com - Media Library coder (Jaxel)... maybe he will just let you continue his work? It would be much faster, and much more reliable than starting from scratch. And will not take forever. Just my 50 cents (or bucks if i have to)...

Wow MonkYZ harsh words U think.
Lancerforhire recently did a mod for me from scratch and he was BRILLIANT. He quoted a price, and a timeline and finshed it perfectly before he said he would. He was not only knowledgeable and helpful but went out of his way to make sure everything worked perfectly for me and I would recommend his services to anyone a hundred times over.
The fee he is asking to do the mod for those interested is for nothing and not going to break the bank and he is offering to support it which he is proved he does on his other mods.
Also passing judgement on people who have only been on the board for less than a year (HellRZR) just shows bad form, you dont even give them a chance to prove themselves. HellRZR has also been very helpful to me giving me time and help for nothing with some stuff I have struggled with.
Just because you have been ripped off before doesnt mean everyone is out there to rip you off

Point well taken and understood. I know what your saying but for us at least we have no option but to be positive and enthusiastic, we have been tied to this mod for quite some time now and are in desperate need of something updated and revamped. Although I also do not trust any one online I believe this project will be transparent and interactive as Lancerforhire suggested it would be. I'm sure we can all come up with an agreement we call can live with and fell comfortable with. Besides it's not like we're gonna be paying hundreds or thousand of dollars. The dev said it would be $50 for 15 people with the project being outlined before hand and any other work or extra features we want to add would be paid separately. I believe he was clear enough on that for me to feel comfortable with.
In any case I will not myself go ask Jaxel to revisit his abandoned mod, he abandoned it for a reason and I don't think he's going to be back at it for a minimal sum of cash. He says he does not want to come back to vb to make a point and I respect him for it and if he's not gonna support the mod then why bother. Besides I already paid him once and I'm not gonna do it again.

Good morning gentlemen. :)
It all comes down to this!
Some of us need a working, supported version of this mod more than others and are willing to pay for it. BUT, the purpose of this group, if I can call it a group, is to have this mod redone by Lancerforhire and then release it for FREE to the vb.org community.
So gentlemen, no one will look down on you if you don't participate, you will end up with this mod anyways. :)
I understand your concerns, I have been down that road many times. However in all the dealings I have had with Lancer, I have nothing negative to say about him.
As far as my involvement, well I along with Mark4865 came up with this idea and we just wanted to see if there was an interest here at vb.org for such a project.
Jaxel did a great thing with his mod and from my understanding didn't leave the mod, he left VB all together. Others asked for his permission to continue/update his mod and unfortunately he refused, which I cant blame him one bit for. He put allot of time and effort in his media library and wants to keep it for himself.
**contributor list updated.
Thanks to all for reading and for your participation in this mod.

Mark4865: Sorry if i was using "hars words". It was not my intention. But as EquinoxWorld said, i already paid for 8WayRun.Com - Media Library and what do i got 6 months later? An unsupported mod and me with the imposibillity to upgrade my forum because the mod became very popular on my website... and it's not working properly with 4.1.4. Plus it doesn't even know the new youtu.be format (not even speaking about other video sources).
So, i only wanted to point out we need somebody really serious involved into this... Maybe i would've paid 10 times more that he asked and i would feel good (for a product i can put my hands on, test it and so on)... but even if i pay 1 buck and i see nothing, it's still a bad deal for me. It's not about the sum... it's about how i would like to see things.
For example... if this media will be good, but unable to import the database from the other media (Video Directory & 8WayRun.Com - Media Library)... for me it would mean nothing, as i can't start from scratch. But that's just me. I will be watching how this project goes... and gladly offer my support, beta testing and money if it has to.
Thank you for understanding and keep up the good work!

Hi MonkYZ
The purpose of the group is as follows :
Have a new mod with current functionality of the current mod along with an import script to be able to transfer from the current media library.
Quote from Lancerforhire : creating a brand new, stable media library mod with the same features. The new mod will clearly have optimizations, performance improvements, and of course and a script to transfer over the media data from the old mod.
If as a group with decide that we want extra functionality, then still will have to be negotiated with Lancerforhire and will have extra fees.
Each of us will have different needs I guess, but I think a wise approach is to start with a base product which and then do add-ons as per user requirements.
Hope this answers your questions...

Sounds perfect to me. We should start off with a base script with the same features Media Library has now and then move on from there if anyone or we all want to but the main idea is to first get a new script with all the same functionality as Media Library and import script, beyond there it's up to us; individually or as a group.
BTW 3 MORE!!!! xD c'mon people!!!!

Would this media gallery be integrated with the CMS?
Will it be a CMS content type? Can we arrange the layout with the CMS? Can we add CMS widgets to the media gallery? Will new entries / comments show up in whats new?
Will it have reputation functionality?
A media gallery is a massive undertaking that should not be underestimated though.

I have nearly 50 reviews (https://www.scriptlance.com/cgi-bin/freelancers/feedback.cgi?p=lancerforhire) for professional work, mostly for vBulletin (43/47). One of the more sophisticated and recent examples of my work is the World Map (V?RLDSKARTA in Swedish) system located here (http://biirds.com/worldmap). I typically work using an escrow system for the security of both the client and myself, but this is not practical with fifteen people.

To my understanding (so far) is that this new mod will have ALL the same features that Media Library has (and possibly more). Lancerforhire I'm sure will layout the specifics when we gather all the contributors.

I would rather pay dbtech the money to do this mod that way we can get integration with other mods, continued updating, new features, etc.
That’d be a lot better than just, “Let’s build the same application again and have someone manage who may stop at some later point and date."

DBtech has their hands full at all times, they have a bunch of projects going right now (like vbarcade) and I doubt they even have staff for this one now or in the near future. Besides if dbtech makes it they have to sell it afterwards therefore it will not cost us the low amount this new mod will costs us, it will probably be much much more.
And FYI I sent a request to the admin there asking for a custom mod (paid) a couple of weeks ago and I never even got a reply back. That leads me to believe they have their own plans and are not looking for custom scripts outside of their own.

Nah I think what's happening here is a demonstration of how vbulletin is most definitely a great resource for coders and users alike. I thought it was funny contrasting the cooperation of users with coders in this thread to the one Boofo started. He's missed out on a trick, $750 in this thread alone.
Someone could make a model going through defunct modifications and doing similar things with each one that people are prepared to pay for.

There's so much mods out there that need to be redone. One could make some serious dough doing this way. Of the top of my head one that I had to outsource was Live Topic for vb4. That mod is a MUST in my forums and we had to hold out on vb4 until we had that mod ported. I bet if someone got Live Topic and asked for people to contribute to get it ported they would get them for sure.

and I needed an mp3 player.
I also needed a photo-slider for the home page or forums.
You can upload videos like youtube with vbtube.
You can link just like on 8waymediarun player and they even have a modification that lets you transfer all your 8waymediarun media to them. I can't wait for this new mod so I'm going to get vbtube.

I personally (Decado) Haven't received any custom work requests that I haven't replied to recently so i'm unsure if perhaps the wrong person was PM'd?
A mod like this is on our to do list, but is unlikely to be in development for a few months yet as we have several projects in development at the moment.
That being said I have only ever heard good things about Lancer, and while I think this mod could eventually run into issues in terms of it not being updated (which is understandable as lancer would only be getting paid for the original development) I'm sure he will do a great job with it.

Iain
Thank you for your post Iain, I actually was the one who mentioned the custom work request. My name on your forums is EquinoxAW, I sent the pm to Belazor actually , thinking he would be the one to talk to too. Didn't really see any place for requests so I just figured. In any case if he gets to read my pm I am still interested. :) Please let us know.
P.S. To the New Media Library project people; whats the word on this committee meeting?

Well folks we lost 2, so we are back down to 13 and that's we me going in twice. :(
So we will have to wait some more to get 2 more people in.
Remember dude you don't need to rush. Why don't you collect half from everyone in at present then stump up the remaining 2 needed from somewhere.

I bought Photopost but their support is non-existent and their video modification sucks.
Are you able to create private albums for videos and pics that do NOT show up in the main directory?
That is the most annoying feature of photopost. I asked them to fix it they said no.
and their video sucks.
I also have 8waymediarun but that support is also nonexistant and there is no social bookmarking.
I was trying to add some last night but gave u. I just looked at your photo gallery and say you already had them in place. Awesome!
Is it possible to create
1. Private albums, no one but the admin and the member who made them can see.
2. Friend's List only albums. Only people on their friends list can see.
3. Member's Only albums. Have to be logged in to see.
4. Public albums, like what you have now.
^^Do these same permissions apply to videos? and to mp3s?
Also, is it possible to create these same permissions for linked vids?
Hello,
i am really sorry but the album features are not available in vbtube.
vBTube storing all videos, photos and mp3's in your filesystem, so its possible to see them external if you know the url. No matter the permission system is coded or not. So thats the reason why i didn't included ablum/friends list permission features.
You can disable vbtube for selected usergroups, but as i said above if someone knows the url of for example a photo he/she can see it.
I am not sure that it makes a sense to code this, because the files are available for public on your ftp ?

I for one have no need for vbtube. I have vbgallery/photpost integrated for picture gallery which is way much more than what vbtube offers for galleries and Media Library which we will now revamp and update. Vbtube support is vague to say the least and at least for us not what we need for our site, we gave it a shot about 6 months ago and installed a trial on our servers; good but not for what we have and need. C'mon people 2 more now? Still room for more contributors...

It's only good for video. Photopost has better pic gallery options.

We are taking this in another direction. If you want this done, please subscribe to this (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=265831) thread, post a "second" (like BOTM nomination) for this mod, and wait for the poll.

Unfortunatelly i was right... This project not even got started, and the coder is already asking ppl if they actually want another project?!? Sorry i was right... i really wanted to see something better than 8WayRun.com Media Library. I think i'll better pay a private coder to just fix the old 8WayRun Media Library. When it will be done, i'll ask him to post it here for free. I just hope he will have the rights to distribute that code... Good luck guys!

I fully agree. In my opinion there is not much work to do. With simple modification in media_ajax_comment.js now I'm able to add new comment.
Still problem with "description" and edit comments.

Gee I only read a few of the early pages ....
wtf is going on - do you want 50 for a media library or not!!
Media Library is what I need now that we've upgraded to 414 and the old version seems to be having problems!!
Are we looking for money for a media library or has that now been squashed for other projects????
Lets keep focused on this issue please
I'll give, but only for a media library .....

Hello Everyone,
Let me try to explain a few things here as I don't want this to look bad on Lancerforhire. It was my idea to start this thread, I contacted Lancer privately and asked him if he would be interested in doing this if there was interest and he agreed.
Now, we needed 15 people to get this going, easier said than done.
People keep coming on board and others dropping out, all for totally valid reasons, so this was becoming very time consuming in recruiting contributors.
Also, lets say we did get the 15 people on board and got this going, what I would have liked as a completed project may not have been the opinion of everyone on the committee. Even with a well structured project plan, I am sure there would have been people who contributed who would not have been please with the completed project.
So I think Lancer has the best approach here, he will develop this sell it commercially. This way a user can see what they are buying and see if it suits there particular needs.
If you guys can get the permission of the developer of 8WayRun Media Library and have him give you the rights to modify his code, more power to you and good luck!
I just wanted to clear the air and I didn't want this thread to turn into a Lancer bashing thread, as again, this was my idea.
I for one have no problem paying for a good mod that suits my needs and is fully supported by a good developer and his company.
Thanks to all who were willing to participate in this venture, but if you sit back and think about it, I think this is the best way to go.
I am asking if a mod can please close this thread.

Oh nice .. another commercial product that most people wont be able to afford - is this a commercial forum now?
I just love projects that start well intentioned and end up costing us hundreds of dollars renewals each year ...... all of my sites are free to my members - but certainly not for me!

I know this is not a commercial forum and this is why I am asking to close the thread as this is the direction this is taking.
Lastly, for the mods of VB.org, please note, I am not trying to promote any developer, company or modification.
But I felt the people that where ready to contribute and participated in this thread had a right to know what direction this was taking so they can make alternative arrangements if need be.

So basically the people who contribute to the product would be getting a discount as the media library project will be $50.00 for contributors?
That sounds cheaper than $150 for vbtube.
Question though, will the product be as good or better than either 8wayrunmedialibrary and vbtube?
If so, count me in.

Mate no problem with donating - I put my hand up gratefully.
But now we have something totally different - a vote to see what mod should be developed? You've been hijacked
I'd donate double if it meant a good media mod - no problem at all!!
